Noticed a growling noise fron my front right wheel as well as a vibration in the steering wheel. Suspect a faulty wheel bearing. Ugh.

I still gotta jack up the front wheels and spin then and check to see if i feel any roughness, but i guess time to prepare.

Couldn't find any sort of DIY on this. Plenty of threads on replacing them, but nobody really showing how. Just want to get a sort o idea of the process and tools needed for me to do it.

What a PITA....just when it was starting to get cold here too. Why couldn't it **** the bed when it's warm and 85 degrees out and gets dark at 8PM?

Who has changed them on their own? How's the job?

Edit: awd is different up front. Rwd front looks easy as pie. Awd has a driveshaft unfortunately.

 

This is in the Technical DIY suspension section. Should answer most, if not all, of your questions. The only thing I would add to the DIY is to prepare to put a lot of force on the axle nut as it's torqued to 177 lb/ft. I ended up having to stand on my breaker bar to loosen the nut when I fixed my axle click.

Thanks, but that is for the rear axle. I'm looking for info on the front as I suspect it's my front right bearing.

But that was a pretty good writeup. Rear doesn't look that bad to do.

I can't even find awd hubs or bearings to purchase


Edit: in my searches, I've found threads saying the hub bearing are covered under power train warranty? Is this true? I still have 3000 miles left on that.

Okay, just looked through my warranty booklet. Bearings ARE covered by power train warranty.....at least that's how I interpret it. Guess I am jut going to confirm it is the bearings and bring it in for warranty work. I have 3000 miles left.

 

^ Let us know how it works out. I'm sure it's just a matter of time until mine go out and I'd rather not have to replace them myself.

By the way, Riverside Infiniti, Circle Infiniti & InfinitiPartsOnline's eBay stores sell the AWD hubs and bearings. The fronts are definitely not cheap though.

 

I will. First i'm gonna inspect over the weekend and confirm it is a bearing and which wheel. Since i can feel the "hum" in the front steering, i'd imagine a quick spin of each wheel might tell me something.

I have some time fortunately.

 

good luck, let me know if you figure out how to get the tires to free spin. When I was trying to figure this out last year, turning the front wheel, turned the rear as well, so i couldnt get it spinning fast enough. In the end, both my front bearings were shot

Yeah, I know I had one side in the air, and turning the front passenger wheel, turned the rear passenger wheel, while in neutral - seems odd for an awd to me..but i dunno. I think i have lifted the front on jacks too to try to turn the wheels, but now i do not recall for sure if i have had the front of this car on jacks or just ramps

 

Well, if both front wheels are up, and you turn one, the other will rotate the other direction due to the open differential.

If the other tire is on the ground, then you would be turning against the clutch in the transfer case.

If all the wheels are up, yup can still transfer power to the rear since the clutch drags slightly. If you put the trans in neutral with the car running, and the SNOW button on, then the transfer case locks and you should be able to turn the front with the rears. Nuetral just disconnects engine power from the drivetrain,


I am just gone lift both fronts and turn and hopefully get a grinding or something rough. I can feel it in the car at 60mph....def feels like front right wheel bearing. I'll just tell dealer front bearings....not sure which. Maybe they will change both.

Sucky how wheel bearings are a common issue on these cars.

 

I hope my wheel bearings aren't shot. I'll test it out this weekend when I take my 19s off.

 

Are you hearing noise from them while driving? If not, I wouldn't worry about it.

 

They hum but I always thought it was just the tires.
