Akebono 2 piece: CZP vs DBA vs Racing brake
Akebono 2 piece: CZP vs DBA vs Racing brake
Id like to see some discussion about which brakes are the best bang for the buck.
What I know:
Front:
OEM: 30 lbs
DBA: 26 lbs (Saw a picture of it on a scale)
CZP: 23 lbs (Mfr claim)
RB: 22 lbs (Mfr claim)
RA: 19 lbs (Mfr claim)
Rear:
OEM: 20 lbs
RB: 16 lbs (Mfr claim)
RA: 17 lbs (Mfr claim)
DBA: 1 piece
CZP: 1 piece
Pricing:
DBA: 650 for fronts http://www.z1motorsports.com/g37_370...oducts_id=5695
CZP: 1092 for fronts + rears + SS lines + stoptech pads + fluid http://www.conceptzperformance.com/C...0970.48.41.228
RB: 2160 for fronts + rears + SS lines + RB pads http://www.racingbrake.com/Brake-Pac...1-p/g37s-p.htm
RA: 1950 for fronts + rears http://www.the370z.com/group-buys/17...brake-kit.html
Design
CZP: Cross drilled + slotted or slotted
DBA: slotted
RB: Open slot - (Slots with drills inside of them)
RA: slotted
Floating:
RB: Yes, full floating - all rotors
RA: Yes, full floating - At least fronts. Probably rears as well but its not clear
CZP: Not to my knowledge
DBA: Not to my knowledge
Note: With 2 piece rotors, you can keep the hub section and just replace the friction material at about half the cost of the full rotor
If anyone has corrections to be made, please add them.

I dont know off the top of my head but if noone chimes in Ill check the prices later tonight.
IIRC CZP is ~ 1100 for 2 pc front and 1 pc rears, lines and pads
Racing brake is around 2 gs for 2 pc fronts, 2 pc rears, lines and pads
Dont know about DBA, kind of ruled them out in my mind because the weight savings are less significant, but I figured other people might bring them up.
They also have different designs
Racing brake does some group buys which range from 10-15% off

I recall reading somewhere that CZPs have thinner rotors, dont know for sure though.
In any case, here is the picture with DBA measurement

Mark, if you know off hand, what are the psecs / pricing for RA?

also a few things to be noted;
*the reason there are so few 2pc rear options is because the rears are too thin and no existing discs are made in that size
*RB has widened the rears 3mm to accommodate while still being able to fit the OEM calipers w/o modification
*RA widened them to the same width as the fronts but uses a caliper spacer that goes in the middle of the rear caliper to make it wider

with all that said, it makes sense to upgrade to full 2pc rotors if your car came w/Akebonos. if you just retro fitted them, then it's a lot of money on top of the retro cost. best bang for buck would be 2pc fronts w/1pc rears.
for someone considering retroing Akebonos and piecing together a budget BBK(SS lines, upraded pads, 2pc rotors all around), for the money you'd be better off just getting a full Willwood 6/4 BBK for less
The way I see it, I have more justification than someone whose car came with akebonos, as I have no rotors at all right now haha
I agree that best bang for buck is probably 2 pc fronts 1 pc rears, maybe I should have used different words. The brakes are fairly big investment, and I dont want to choose based purely on price and be dissapointed later, I want to be blown away
The CZP offers 14 lbs weight reduction total, the RA offers 28 and the RB offers 24. If you are going based on lbs/$, there isnt that much variation
I already go the calipers & powdercoating at a good price...~800 in for that, problem is I wont be able to find nice used rotors

Akebono's value lies in the "wow" factor, they're pretty huge and look great customized but if you try and build them to the performance spec of a "true" BBK, you end up spending more and getting less
I only made this thread to compare the rotors, not discuss which bbk is best, I believe akebonos can be great brakes with a good set of rotors, and even if I picked the most expensive rotors available, I would still be in about 1 g less than willwoods
