front brembo pad replacement question/confusion

ok so I looked over the diy as well as the youtube video floating around. my question is they greased the entire back side of the pad(where the piston will make contact with the pad). no where does it say to do that in the fsm. only to grease the sides. now wat am I missing here? is this some common best practice that's why its not mentioned in the fsm?

also I have stop tech pads with shims already attached. im assuming the shim is already greased from the factory right? I notice in the diy theyre greasing the shims and reusing the old shims. im assuming because their pads didn't come with the shim already attached?

Greasing between the pad and shim is generally just to reduce noise.
Noise is caused by vibrations so any imperfection between pad and rotor can cause a sound.
Think of the tiny needle that plays a record.
I'm a mechanic and do brakes daily and tend to not grease anything.
A decent pad already has a quality shim that is designed to be quiet.
I steer clear of greasing slides and the side due to grease catching any and all dirt and dust and causing it to gunk up and not allow the pad to slide back and forth as it should.

They're not applying grease, but brake quiet. It dries rubbery and acts as a sound deadener. Also eliminates metal on metal contact. Grease the slides, and apply brake quiet to the shims (back).

Omg! That first video had a pad that looked like half of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich!
Do not do that! That's not necessary.
I didn't watch the whole video or the second yet, about to eat but had to comment.
Clean of the pins with a wire brush and call it a day!

Oh brake quiet, yeah it's ok stuff. I wouldn't be concerned with all that.

^ this. No need to spread it on. Buy the spray, and give it one short burst.

Ah I see that's 2 different things grease is grease n brake quiet is brake quiet. I thought they were 2 of the same since the grease has the quiet capability too. Seems more like a need basis only thing for the brake quiet gel? Doesn't look like they applied it from the factory or was it more conservative from the factory? Thx for the replies

It's really not needed. Most decent pads come with a rubberized shim anyway these days. If you want to try it out, grab a can at autozone for 3 bucks. It's basically just a sprayable rubber. I use it, but only because it makes me feel better.

Ima do the install without it first n see how it goes. Adding it i
On later won't be a big deal, if there's squealing. Last question is it necessary to do the entire back like they did or jus where the piston makes contact with the pad?

Just where the piston hits is fine.

Yep, it's not needed with shims, but it's kind of like doubling up the protection. Not necessary at all, but some people use it just for extra insurance.

I've done my Brembo pads a few times (Project Mu NS replacements) and always put 3M Brake Lube on the back of the shim and on the sides. I don't go crazy with it, but just enough to have a thin layer. I never get squealing.
