Brake squeal. Shims? Dust shield?
I had the dealer replace my rear pads about 10-15k ago (first set was still alright, but on their way out at 55-660k
). Since day 1, the rears have squealed when coming to a stop gradually, however it's not all the time. Took it to the dealer and of course it hasn't done it when I've taken them for a ride, and it's been for oil changes there a few times since, and they haven't found anything.
I took the pads off and regreased everything myself and that helped for a small time. The only other action I can take for immediate results is to slam on the brakes from about 10mph. That quietens them up for a bit.
I thought maybe it was just the pads and I have a new set of akebono pads on the bench, but I don't know that's it. I'm wondering if this could happen if the shims are off? I have no idea how they go on, I just replaced what was there when I regreased. I wouldn't know if something's missing either (is there a pic of shim assembly/parts?). Also thought maybe I missed a shield or something rubbing the rotor.
Any ideas or anything else to look for? Hoping to head down over thanksgiving to take it apart and check it over/replace the pads

yes the shims need to go on them to reduce noise(if you have them). they just clip on the back of the pads. the mesh one first, then the solid one. also you don't use grease on these parts that can also cause it to squeak. Brake parts should be dry and oil free. You use brake lube between the pad and shims which, when applied dries slightly rubbery and is not oily at all and provides dampening not actual lubrication.
That may be the issue. I don't recall a mesh shim. Anyone got a pic of this?
Yep, it was the correct stuff, and applied between the pad and the shims. I could have been more accurate/specific. Thanks.

not all brakes have the mesh shim I just dont know if yours do or not but as long as you lubed them up decently and let them dry before installing you should be ok. also if you use performance pads they will squeal in cold weather due to the brake materials and that cant be fixed. The brakes may just need to be used more to break them in.
