Coilover clanking issue

So recently I got new swift springs for my g35 coupe. I didn’t like them very much so i took the strut out and put the old coilover springs back in.

After the install, my car is back to it’s normal spring rate, but every little small bump I hit, my coilover rattles and clanks, it does it on both sides on the rear. I’ve set my preload, do i need to set it higher? I’ve made sure to tighten everything very well when putting it back on, i feel like i’m missing something. Has anyone else had this issue before, it only had happened after i had disassembled it.thank you !

How much preload did you use? Very generic rule of thumb is start at zero, top lock nut snug tight with your bare hands, then set the lock nuts together, then tighten the top nut (spring) until you have about 1/4" gap which is typically the width of the spanner wrench (wrench fits between the two lock nuts).

Yep, that’s what i did, i just set it to where my wrench was able to fit in between. I did it off of the car, does that make it any different?

Not in this case no. I'd go over everything by hand, shake everything and see if something is obviously loose that might have been missed.

It sounds like you might need to adjust your preload on the coilovers to resolve the clanking issue.
