What does a bad strut sound like when driving?

Is it a knocking type noise when you drive over rough roads?

A knocking or a rattling sound. Not to be a smartass, but make sure you dont have something bouncing around in your car.

also creaks and sometimes shows fluid leaking from under the dust boot.
