Potential New G Owner - Looking for input

Hi all,

I'm a long time lurker here on these forums, as I've been considering a G coupe since I sold my 350Z earlier last year. I was planning on saving up for a few more months and having a nice down payment for an '06 used, but unfortunately my wife's car was in a wreck last week and it looks like it will be totaled out.

I've got my eye on a variety of '03-'05 Gs that are going for $20k-27k. I'm hoping you all may be able to help me with a couple of general questions I've got before taking the plunge.

1) This will be my daily driver, however I need to know the viability of a child seat in the rear for occasions where I drag the kid around. Do they fit w/o much hassle? Can someone still sit in the passenger seat w/ one in?
2) On my Z I bought Potenza S03 Pole Positions @ $225 or so per tire. Can I get away with more reasonably priced tires on a G?
3) Are there any major recalls or general problems with any of the specific year's models that I should be aware of?

Any info is greatly appreciated! I hope to join the ranks soon

LURKER!! Welcome to the board buddy!

1. Baby car seats actually fit better in the coupe because of the bucket seating. Has your standard car seat features like the anchors located between the cushions and one up on top. Of course getting the child in a coupe vs a sedan is more work because you'll have to maneuver through the door but it's no biggie. Definitely can sit another passenger with the baby seat in place. Both passengers are separated by a center console.

2. Depending on what rims you have - 17" or 19". As with any car, it depends on what type of wheels you want. I got (4) General Tires 275/35/19 for $160 each.

3. I'd stay away from the 03' models, more specific manual trannies. Some minor problems with the 04' models - fuel hose, window, radio, etc. 05' models (which I have) seem to be good. You can read up on all the recalls and TSB's HERE

NOW BUY THE DAMN CAR!!!

Thanks a ton for the response I think I worded the baby seat question a bit weird, I was actually wondering if someone can comfortably fit in the front passenger seat w/ a baby seat behind them.

I've been searching these forums for differences in the model years, it's been very helpful. I think I am aiming for an '05 now, but there are some hot deals on a few '03 models that are tempting. Either way I am getting a 6MT, and the only serious problem I'm reading about is the oil consumption, which quite honestly doesn't seem like too big of a hassle to deal with. Thanks for the link, going through the recalls/TSBs now.

A baby seat will have more room than an adult sitting in the back. Depending on how many months your baby is, you'll either be facing the baby towards the back or the front. When I load my niece back there, I like having as little room for her as possible. So I'll back the front passenger seat until it wedges her baby seat.

The seats work just fine with a baby seat. You will want to put a towel folded under it so you won't damage the leather. The only seats that didn't fit well for me were the booster type for older children. I wound up putting a little thicker towel under and it leveled out just fine. My eight year old sits behind me. He's just now having problems with his feet hitting the back of the seat.

So after more poking around here, this oil consumption issue has me rather concerned. Does anyone have a good feel for how prevalent it is? Any percentage guesstimates of how many Gs are affected? I have to admit I am becoming very wary of going with a G now

ok i understand why the 6MT models in the '03 should be avoided, but what about the autos?

Def. plenty of room in the back for a baby/booster seat. Only major recall is on the 06-07 models and those are for the headlights. but they aren't a big deal at all if you ask me.

How serious are the issues w/ the 03' 6MTs? Are they all affected?

Kind of resurrecting an old thread here, but I've got a new interest in a G again. After reading about the oil consumption issue and seeing how significant it was, I had kind of sworn off the G. However, the prices on the '04 models have dropped dramatically over the last few months, and I am having a hard time looking the other way.

I am not seeing any major recalls/bulletins for the '04 model. Does anyone know of or had any major issues with them? Based on it's price point of $19-$22k, does it sound like a good buy, especially considering it's not a rev-up engine? Thanks for any input!
