Need Advice: Looking to buy a G35 Coupe

I've been online shopping for a G35 Coupe for the last couple of weeks and came across this '06 6MT Coupe with 21K miles for only $20,995. They recently dropped the price from $23,995. It has a clean CARFAX report, one owner, 19" wheels, sunroof, BOSE.

It seems like a much lower price than what I've seen cars like this go for usually; I've seen comparable cars for $24k-25k. What do you guys think? Should I be suspicious? Or is this about the going rate? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

i just bought 1 week ago: 07 g35 black on black 6mt navi prem package aero kit (everything but the rear active stearing) 16k miles from an infiniti dealer under warranty till 60k...i paid 27,500 in a Very competitive NYC/NJ market...and a 780 credit score

you prob went onto like ebay and checked out prices and was like "am i just awesome or is something wrong here"

all these cars are based on a yield spread from the price the dealer got/bought the car from (trade in, lease return, etc)...

as a former broker, i dont see how they could be making money on the deal...

car looks sweet though... any questions, let me know...i was doing the SAMe thing you are two weeks ago,,,,obsessivly looking around for info/prices for my G

great price...since it's still covered..you don't have to worry about the oil consumption issue....check for accidents or flood damage...

Carfax isn't nearly as accurate as autocheck. PM me the VIN and I'll run an autocheck for you. Also, if this car was bought at a manheim auction (within the past 30 days), I'll be able to tell you exactly how much the car was bought for.

Right now, an 06 g35 with 20K is worth about 17500 in an open wholesale (auction) market. $20995 as a retail price point is a good price, but it sounds more like a $19500 - $20000 ride.

PM me and I'll do some further investigation for you.

Thanks for your reply guys. I actually went to test drive this car over the weekend. I drove for over an hour to get to the dealership and wasn't even able to drive it out of the lot because it was snowing in Chicago that night. The car had trouble moving even on 1" of snow on the ground; granted, the road under was probably icy. The manager said that it was because of the 19" performance tires. Does this sound right?? Do performance tires really make THAT much of a difference on wet/icy conditions? So is my only way of driving it during Chicago winters is by putting winter tires on?

Also, I noticed that when the engine was running, there was excessive noise coming from the belt. The manager played it off saying that the belt got wet and probably rusted a little. He said it should be good to go if they put some grease on it. Does that sound a little shady to you guys too??

But other than that, the car looked clean. When I asked about the price of the car, the guy told me that since they are a BMW dealership, they just wanted to get the G35 out of their lot. It was a previous trade-in from one of their clients who bought a car from them.

As you can tell, I'm not the most knowledgeable about cars. Any advice you guys can give would be greatly appreciated.

poonATTACK, thanks for your help!

Something's fishy here... You should have been able to navigate the parking lot; if not, there's a problem. Were you spinning the rear tires..? Both..? OK, maybe ice... Only one rear tire spinning means the LSD is malfunctioning.
Serpentine belts can't rust - greasing one is a cheap trick to quiet a damaged or worn out belt (metal squealing indicates a bad bearing somewhere on the belt's track). I'd avoid this G (and this dealer as well).

Looks like a BMW dealership from the photograph. If its the one I think it is, (on Ogden), they probably buy more cars at Manheim auctions than any other dealership in Chicago. So I seriously doubt it was a trade. If they insist it was a trade ask them for the documents from the transaction to prove it.

Sales rep was right about the summer performance tires. In slushy/ iced up parking lots that we experienced this past weekend in Chi-town you're not going anywhere on those tires.

You ought to check out the threads on this sub-forum which refer to Winter Tires or Winter Driving to see how many snowbelters with max performance tires drive on winter tires in the winter. (The issue isn't exclusively a G35 problem).

If you had called the dealer and told them you were coming in for a test drive that night I'm surprised they didn't warn you it would be a problem.

You think they'd be smart enough to fit some 18" wheels and All Season tires on that car trying to sell it in Chicago this time of the year. Of course that would cut into their profit.

ironmike - I agree with you. I thought there was something fishy there.

athens - No, this is the Laurel BMW dealership in Westmont. The salesman I was dealing with was pretty nice, but I couldn't trust his manager with his "just grease it and it'll be fine" comment. Anyways, I do find it odd that he told me it was a trade in, but in poonAttack's car report told him that it was bought in an auction 7 days ago.

Overall, I don't completely trust these guys, so I think I'll stay away. Thanks for your help guys! Hopefully I can find one I like soon...

cerr - I live in Chicago, so it probably wouldn't work unless he's willing to ship. Thanks for looking out though. Good luck with the sale.

fluffy - It sure is a good looking car. I want one NOW! haha.

YES!!!

Laurel BMW is on Ogden Ave. I just didn't want to refer to them by name.

Likely 70% of most any late model luxury cars transacted come off lease at the end of 3 years. They all go to auction. As in Manheim. Very few buy and trade after three years. If they finance for more than 36 mos., as most do, most of the loans are going to be upside down. Too much depreciation in that period of time. Even on a G. Problem is what your finding now more than ever at auction is lots of repossessed late model cars.

It's the Repos that I would be more careful about. When someone is that behind on car payments how well are they maintaining the car that the bank is about to take back??

Consider their misrepresentation that "they acquired the car as a trade in" as puffing or B.S. or exaggeration. Doesn't necessarily mean the car isn't good. Laurel's auction buyers are reputed to be among the best out there. Which means they are probably more particular about what they bid on.

I would have less trust in a dealer or private party, for that matter, who claims that they (or the driver) drove the car so gently when so see unusual wear, road damage, and mods.

Oh my bad. I'm not familiar with that area, so I didn't realize that you were talking about the same dealership. Thanks for the info. regarding the Manheim auctions. I just found another G that was purchased at the Manheim auction. I think I'm gonna go check it out tomorrow. Thanks!

I just purchased a G35 today (I didn't go with the first one from this post). I'm extremely happy with the purchase and look forward to posting on this forum more often. Thank you all for your help.

I have one question though. I didn't take my vehicle to a dealer beforehand. Do you guys think I should take it there for a routine checkup and an oil change or something?? LMK what you guys all did after you purchased your vehicle (if it was used). Thanks!
