Unhappy my g is already rusting

i was washing my g last night for the first time in a while and noticed some rust on the back trunk lid (a section just below the spoiler). looks like there was a very small chip in that area and now it is brown. at first i thought it was just dirty but after careful examination it is definitely a small section of rust (a few millimeters in diameter at best). does anyone know how the warranty works for rust protection on our cars? would this be covered? and how would i go about it with infiniti service?

in case infiniti won't do jack (which i already know will be the conclusion). how can i repair the damage? i was thinking about wrapping some sand paper around a toothpick (maybe 2000 grit) and trying to sand it off. then i would touch the area up with touch-up paint. as i said above... it is a very small area that is affected... but i don't want this to turn into the plague. i'm gonna try and take a pic of it tonight. i don't know much about rust and how to treat it so any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

I have the same thing, but mine is on the front of my roof. I asked the dealership if this would be covered and they said no.

I haven't fixed it yet, but would be interested in knowing how to fix this as well.

Try some clay bar first before you go about trying to sand it down.

Paint chip...fix it your self.
Infiniti won't help you. Read you owners manual/warranty.

Picus112 can aid you in the touch up part. His work is amazing.

Please post up a pic of the chip.

Good Luck,

Bill

That's normal.. cars will have that..

Clean it off with claybar.. Are you sure it's rust on the actual car.. or was it from driving through a construction site?

I probably should of, but I've never read the corrosion warranty in the manual. Does it only cover rust if it's all the way through??

Hey guys; the reason it isn't covered is because it's a chip. Any car with a chip will rust in a couple days exposed to the elements. It's a bummer, but at least our hoods are aluminum and won't rust. OK, how to take care of it.

1) Clean the area really well with alcohol and water. Regular rubbing alcohol mixed 50/50 with water in a spray bottle, spray, wipe, repeat. Make sure to really soak the chip.

2) This is optional. Get a rust pen from Canadian Tire. It's a pen with glass tips at the end that act like sandpaper. Put it in the chip and spin it to get most of the rust. I would personally do this if the rust seems substantial.

3) Also, get a rust converter from CT. I showed Bill this at the meet; and Edmond in person, it's a neat product. Just lather the area with it (wear gloves, it's gross), let sit for about 10 min, repeat 2-3 times, and the leftover rust turns to primer.

4) Get a primer pen (CT again), it's a ball point pen that spits out primer. Fill the chip.

5) Wait 4 hours.

6) Fill chip with touchup, repeat until level (wait 4 hours in between coats).

7) Success.

Don't know the exact wording, but...
It's only from the inside out...
In other words, nothing that starts from a scratch, chip, ding or paint flaking off.

Great explanation Kevin, this is definitely worth keeping!

the warranty doesn't really cover much. looks like there's a lot of loop holes for them to worm themselves out of.

pretty sad to already see rust on a car that is just over a year old.

I'm not defending Infiniti, but any car with a chip will develop rust if left un-primed. It's bare metal + elements = rust. The Maranello I worked on this weekend had rust in some of the chips. I'm always on the side of the little guy, but within reason. If car companies starting giving out repaints or body panels to everyone with rust in the chip 75% of the cars on the road would make claims on it. It's a fact of life; same as you're told to change your oil every 5k km you should probably check for chips every few weeks and hit them with primer.

Corrosion warranties are made to protect against a manufacturer defect, which is true of almost all warranties. That means rust from the inside out, or rust which starts to bubble with no chip.

Whoa...what's it called? What section of CT would I find it in? This would rock to clean up the surface rust in the RX7.
