The reason for this is that people downtown tend to take transit and are not driving a lot and there is less chance of an accident. Most people that live in Maple tend to commute and there is more chance of an accident because of the time on the road every day. The rate is figured on where the people that are having the accidents live.
Just some more fun insurance facts!
Dontcha' love it!
That's nuts! You'd think all the the crazy traffic, the crazy taxi drivers, the crazy pedestrians, the crazy cyclists, and crazy squeegees would make downtown a heck of a lot more accident prone.

alxwang - a round trip from the edge or Toronto (say North York, Etobicoke, deep Scarborough) to the downtown core, is anywhere from 45 to 60 kms.

The downtown is accident prone but it is the people from the burbs that are driving down there. The people from downtown take transit.
Like I said, the rate is based on the postal code where the driver LIVES, they may be driving in the city a lot but they live in the outlying areas.
Hope that clears that up.
Matt

i'm sorry but that's the stupidest thing i have ever heard. that means that the insurance company automatically assumes that just because u live in the burbs u go driving in downtown toronto, hence your a higher risk driver. i live in etobicoke and work in mississauga... does that mean i get a cheaper rate? how can the rates in maple be higher than toronto? maple is located way out in the boonies near bolton/nobleton. when i went to western... my rates were considerably cheaper when i switched my location from toronto to london. this stuff is just all very confusing and ridiculous in my opinion. which insurance company's are doing this? crazy, crazy, crazy. then again, i am forced year round coverage on my motorcycle... go figure??

FWIW,
In my experience they wanted both home & work locations.
The rate def. varried based on the work addy.

dunno if this has changed or not

I don't know what to tell you man, it is nothing but pure statistics. There is no assumption about it. It is all about the number of claims. London and Maple are two different things because a lot of people live and work in London and area.
Most people in Maple, for example, would do a lot of commuting.
This isn't any conspiracy or anything, just pure Math.
It is very confusing, that is why I am not an actuary (statistics cruncher), I just sell the stuff.
There is more to it than just location for your rates, that is why everyones rate is different (age, accidents, tickets, type of car, how long licenced, etc)
I live in Kingston and rates are about 40% cheaper than T.O.

They don't usually get the work address, they just ask how far your commute is.
