New Toy for me to play with!
I'm also an owner of the D80 and I can vouch for it. If the D80 is out of your budget, consider the new D40 or D40x. This is the replacement for the D50. It's also 10 MP and shares many components of the D80 (just like how D80 shares from its bigger D200 brother).
Remember, get a decent body and invest in the lens. Lens is everything in SLR. I had the 18-200VR but found it too slow. Using a 17-55 as my primary lens.

I think that the D40/x maybe a good upgrade from a point and shoot but anyone that wants to get serious into photography may find them to be limiting as they progress. With only 3 focus points, no screw drive motor so you'll be limited to only lenses that have a built in AFS/HSM motors unless you want to manual focus, no top LCD read out with the settings, i think just one command dial ..etc. IMHO, it is probably either save up for a D80 or get a used D70/D50 from Redflagdeals.com to learn with.
Merkle Camera and Video is having a sale right now...there is an advertisement in the Toronto Sun.

Another place I found when digging around for deals was www.thecamerastore.com, they are located in Alberta so you only pay one tax. Even when you factor in the shipping they are cheaper than Henrys regular prices.
If you need a camera bag or filters etc, eBay is your friend. You can get Hoya Super HMC filters from vendors in HK for 1/3 what you pay at local shops.
