New Toy for me to play with!

So I cave and got myself a Nikon D80 figure is a good investment that will last me probably a lifetime. I am an amateur so these photos may not do the camera justice. But here are some of my favourite shots so far that I have taken

Hey Colling, i am not expert in this feild so I suggest you go to your local henry's camera shop. But the biggest difference between the D80 and D50 is the obvious 10 megpixel vs 6.1. Also there are a lot more features in the D80 that the D50 does not have. I want to later print much larger prints then the noraml so that is why I went with the 80. Also the D70 and D50 has the old technology from 2 years ago where as the D80 has the latest greatest. So is all up to you on how you want to use the camera. The D50 does just as well as any other DSLR camera just less features.

I will be taking a course at Henry's on the camera itself along with some books that I have to teach me how to use it.

Hey my good man.....The course you'll take will be invaluable

I'm sure the 80 is even better than the 60 and has up-to-the-minute technology, tho I suspect that the price might be high.
I know the 50 is somewhere in the $1k range which is closer to my budget...

By the way you've described the 80, I wouldn't be surprised if it were closer to $2k......= mucho dinero

I'll have to get on a website and check features and prices again.

C.

Actually for the D80 is 1400 around for my package. They included 2gig of sd ram, and a carrying case.

Very Nice Eric...
I'm in the market too, I'd love to get back into an SLR.

But, I still need easy of portability so likely will stay away from a dSLR this time.
I'm looking at a tweener.... near SLR functionality and better than the average pocket cam.

I was looking at the Canon G7, but haven't decided yet.
* 10.0 Megapixels
* 6x optical zoom lens with optical Image Stabilizer and SR coating
* DIGIC III and iSAPS with Advanced Noise Reduction and Face Detection AF/AE
* 2.5” high-resolution LCD with wide viewing angle and anti-glare coating
* ISO 1600 for flash-free, low light shooting
* Ergonomic design with dedicated ISO and Multi Control dials for fast, easy operation
* 25 shooting modes including full manual control and 2 custom settings
* Extra telephoto reach with Digital Tele-Converter and Safety Zoom
* Hot shoe support for Canon Speedlite flashes and optional lens accessories

Well the main question is do you want something you can just carry around easy or do you want quality. Lets say you want quality but you don;t want to pay for something like the D80 well the D40x and the D50 would be it. If you think about it even though is a 6.1 megpixel the quality of the shots is by far not comparable to a point and shoot 10meg pixel camera. Also you have the option of buy different lenses. I went DSLR because i know I am going to take F1 pictures and without a DSLR forget it. Plus like I really want to be able to take some good pix and blow them up to poster for myself or friends hence I went with the D80.

If you look around even people with D40x and D50 takes great pic but is mostly due to the lense and tripod.

Yeah I'd love to get back into an SLR.... it's a tough decision.
Guess I'll go see what the guys at Henry's have to say.
I get most of me equip from them as well.

Nice Eric,

Just watch out for that nasty N.A.S. (Nikon aqcuisition syndrome) it is just as bad a the mod bug for the G. I bought my D50 with 2 kit lenses last summer for my trip to Europe. Since then I have spent close to 3x as much on additional lenses, filters, a speed light and some miscellaneous accessories. Currently looking for a SB800 speedlight to play with Nikons Creative Lighting system that allows you to wireless control multiple flashes Enjoy your new toy.
