Hey guys im just wondering if you have to pay both taxes (14%) on used car sale regardless of if its a private sale or off a dealer lot.

Thanks!

14% for sales tax? wow...is it that high everywhere in Canada?

In the US, you have to pay taxes for used cars no matter where you buy it.

yea you end up paying sales tax when you register the vehicle at the dmv... so when you get your tags it will be registration fee + sales tax

no GST on a private sale, PST only. So only 8% tax.

no gst. only pst (7%) in BC on what you claim to be the purchase price.

a common trick is to say you paid less than actual thus saving the pst on the difference between what you actually paid and what you tell the gov't you paid.

just don't get too liberal with this ploy. don't go below a wholesale (which is thousands below retail)price or they might ask questions. this only works for private sale.

That's the old method we used up until about 15 years ago until the government decided to stop the bleeding from cheating. Nowadays we have a book price (not publicly available) that lists values. You pay either your claimed price or the book price whichever is higher on private sales. The book seems to be a little less than black book retail.

I think you pay both taxes if you buy it off the lot, but only pay PST if you buy it private
