Question for those who live in Toronto who drive in the snow
Would a G35 sedan with snow tires be able to make it up a hill such as the hill at Yonge and York Mills (heading south)?
My front wheel drive Acura with snow tires did not feel that great in yesterdays snow storm.
I have a 08 on order and having been driving front wheel drive cars for the last 10+ years in the snow without many problems. I am kinda worried since this will be my first rear wheel drive car.
It seems most of the guys on this forum run blizzaks, what are your experiences driving in the snow here in the GTA?

You will be fine with winter tires on. I noticed that in the GTA (especially busy areas) the roads arent bad at all. There is usually enough steady traffic to keep the roads fairly drivable. Infact i counted 4 days this winter in which the roads were actually covered in snow (ie. cant see the pavement).
With regards to hill, Ive never been there but if you dont feel comfortable driving there, take the extra 5 mins and make a detour. Especially with the new car.

I have made it up the Don Mills hill from York Mills to Sheppard Ave in my sedan many times in the snow.
This mornings drive was the first time that I felt the car getting away from me. I was traveling along the 401E from the DVP to the Allen Expwy in the slow lane. It was plowed but ice covered and very slippery.
The G was ok thanks to the traction control and a good set of snow tires.

I drive my 6MT coupe all winter - good snows - no problems at all. It's always the 4x4 SUV's in the ditch - false sense of security, I guess.
Maybe I drive more cautiously in winter knowing that I'm in a RWD coupe.
Though I have an FX35 and haven't ditched that one either.
Age and experience help.

This is my first winter in a RWD car in 20 years, so I understand the apprehension, OP. But so far, I've had no problems. You definitely have to be a bit more careful than in a FWD car as a couple of the responses note, especially on the uphills, but it's manageable. From my experience, the people who just can't make it up hills (under most conditions) are the ones who either panic or just don't know what they're doing and gun it harder as their wheels start to slip.
No problems here with Blizzak WS-50s. Don't hesitate to turn off the T/C though, to conserve momentum... not for drifting.

Good information in the preceeding posts.
I've got a set of snows (Blizzaks) on my 05 sedan 6MT and can't believe how well it handles in the worst of snowstorms. The combination of traction and stability control (and a dose of common sense) makes the car as driveable as my wife's SUV. As the guys are saying, taking it easy and keeping your wits about you will ensure a damage free trip-----just keep an eye open for all the 4X4 SUVs who think their invincible and don't remember the simply laws of physics------objects in motion tend to stay in motion unless acted on by an outside force (in this case it's usually a guardrail). Have fun..
