Hyundai is marketing this as a G37 Coupe at a Mustang price, just like they're marketing the Genesis sedan as a BMW 5-series at a Malibu price.

I believe that Hyundai's brand strategy is NOT a direct attack on the German and Japanese automakers (as the OP implies), but rather it is to steal American car sales by offering import quality/style/features at a domestic price-point.

There's smart guys at Hyundai these days!
I think you guys are bang on....
You're going to see quite a few of these on the road.

All very valid points..

Ultimately, it's going to be for those young guys that see it and think its going to be the same thing as a G37.

The same way that people see Axis as the same as Volks. It looks really similar, it costs alot less. The important question though is which one will hold up better? Let's hope their engine doesn't Crack over bumps

Precisely. That's their strategy. They're not stupid but I'm convinced they're really smart either. They have not been meeting any of their internal aggressive sales targets.

Do you guys know how well the Veracruz is doing? I believe that was their luxury utility vehicle aimed at Acura RDX/FX35/RX330/350 and it won alot of awards too. I think that might be a good indicator (it cost well above 30k) to what one can expect for Hyundai's sucess with this.

Yes, I have Hyundai dealers amongst most makes as clients. I'm speaking of "internal" goals on all of their models and their "success" as they measure it.

Many of their cars are winning awards but are not selling to the level one would expect given that. It's taking them longer to penetrate markets than they expected based on the quality and value points their cars appear to deserve.

Oh sorry; meant to phrase my question as I really have no idea how well Hyundai is selling; haha.

This Hyundai looks more like the G37 than the G35 Coupe.

My guess is that most people have yet to get over the perception of what Hyundais used to be in the past. I would say that when most people think of Hyundai, they still think of what their vehicles were like many years ago.......which were pretty bad. It may take some time yet for people's perception to change.......much like what the big 3 will have to overcome. Of course, this is all just my guess and not really backed by any facts.

OK OK OK, I've heard enough!.....Let me tell you ALL something from a man who has FIRST HAND experience with a Hyundai (me)!

I ownED a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon GT V6 (170HP/180tq). This was the new generation motor/chassis/quality line for Hyundai that supposedly put them up top. pfffft.
It was the WORST quality brand of car I have ever heard of, and owned. Thank God it got written off and I now drive a G! (I sooo truly mean that)

I 'copy and pasted' a thread I started in the Tiburon forum about problems in my Tiburon, which, for your information, are not unique to mine and are shared by the majority of tiburon owners:
Curious to know what kind of problems or parts were replaced on your tib for repair purposes not performance modding.. I wanna know if it's just me, or if my tib is a one of a kind, piece of shiit! Note your engine, year, km's please
Here's mine: 03 Tib GT V6 5spd, 85,000km's
(4yr old car)

- flywheel (original 2piece separated, wobbled and screwed up the clutch assembly and bearing)
- clutch kit (bearing too)
- starter
- four 02 sensors, hyundai used the wrong kind for first year model, and they crapped out. THANKS TO NT.com for info about getting them replaced under warranty, dealer tried blaming it on my exhaust.
- computer module that deals with turn signals and lighting (yah the whole CPU) replaced, turn signal would stay on all the time.
- two seized rear calipers (first passenger side, a year later the driver's)
- rear passenger side wheel bearing (car's not lowered, didn't hit any major potholes or curb)
- door lock actuator
- driveshaft cv joint shot (after the 6 month of owning it, did not abuse car)
- factory battery died after 3 yrs of use, dealer told me off, then i bought a mastercraft.
- broken interior air vent adjuster tab
- burnt out climate control light bulb. replaced
- power window motor replaced driver side
- air conditioner needed recharge after 3 yrs
- trunk spring actuator needs replacement / readjustment (doesnt pop open when using the interior button). no time lately to figure it out.
- brake lines were moved, hyundai defect recall
- front stabilizer rods shot, needed to be cut off, replaced when installing clutch
- sunroof motor replaced, was hesitating to open close, it came off track all by itself somehow and the motor cooked, warranty job.
- passenger door hinge (kept squeaking unbearably loud, grease didnt work, dealer replaced it)
- spoiler pads were too thin, chipped the paint off the trunk, hyundai recalled it, repainted trunk.
- spare keyless entry remote doesn't work / needs re-programming, i dunno. tried new battery, still not working.

damn, after reading this list i just made i feel like

HYUNDAI POWER
to add- since that thread to the day of write off:

-keyless entry remotes completely shot, both remotes dead and could not be reprogrammed (needed to buy new ones)
-upper rear motor mount broken, needed to replace, motor wobbled
-stabilizer linkage on front passenger side crapped out...replaced
-car stalled out on its own one day, wouldn't restart. jump started it and drove it in "LIMP mode". defective 'Crank Position Sensor". replaced it.
-seized tensioner pulley (for timing belt)

PLEASE DO NOT BUY A HYUNDAI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wish that experience upon no one. Their quality, customer service, respect for an individual, and service departments (I tried more dealers) suck.

The cost of repairs made that car (originally $30Grandish) go near $40,000 and luckily most of the expensive repairs were under warranty.

Sticky this to whoever believes Hyundai has potential! I wouldnt buy that piece of $%#& if they gave it to me for $20,000. with repairs, it will amount to the price of a BMW M3 in about 5 years!
