Today I went into my dealer to pick up oil for my Manual Tranny and Rear Dif and I got charged $88.22 CAD.

Paid for the oil first before they brought it out to me and I got 3 bottles of Quaker State 75w90 and 2 bottles of Penzoil oil for the Rear. So now I am stuck with oil I'm sure I could of bought at a local car shop or even Canadian Tire for cheaper and if I refund the oil they will charge 20% restocking fee as stated on the receipt. This is BS.

I asked the guy should I not be getting genuine Nissan Oil and he stated that no dealer in Canada uses them anymore and that this is good enough for the car.

Is this true that all dealers are using Quaker State and Penzoil oil for the Rear?

This took place at Markham Infiniti.

After looking at the owners manual online it states

"Manual Transmission Gear Oil

Genuine Nissan Manual Transmission Fluit (MTF)
HQ Multi 75W-85 or API GL-4, Viscosity SAE 75W-85 or 75w-90"

This means our car DOES NOT REQUIRE the Nissan Manual Tranny Oil. It is a must only for the Automatic Transmissions only or your warranty will be void.

Now I still need to go back and ask why they game me GL-5 oil and not GL-4 oil.

For those people who have had their oil changed by the dealer can you check your invoice and see what type of oil they have listed?

What they gave you is correct, one is for the trany and one is for the diff.

I was curious to confirm he had the two different specs and knows which ones to use appropriately.

Believe it or not but you can use GL-5 gear oil for the transmission and rear diff, if you like. The biggest thing about a GL-5 oil for the manual transmission, is to make sure it's "yellow metal" compatible. It usually just means that there is no sulphur present or added to the gear oil. Most GL-5 gear oils are backwards compatible to a GL-4 rating.

Myself personally, I use Shell's full synthetic GL-5 75-90W Spirax gear oil in the transmission, rear, and in the trucks differentials, as well.

Ok for the Quaker State Oil the specs are SAE 75W-90 GL-5 and it states Full Synthetic Gear Lube Oil on the bottle for Manual Tranny.

For the Rear Dif they gave me Pennzoil Gearplus SAE 80W-90 GL-5

They gave me the correct Rear Differntial Gear Oil but incorrect Tranny Oil.
Tranny Oil states that it must be GL-4 on Page 9 and I got GL-5 which is the QUAKER STATE bottle.

go back and tell them you want your money back and you don't want to pay the restocking fee. you should have done this at the moment you say quaker state in the guys hands when he came out of the back. RAISE A STINK if they give you any trouble.

See post #7. You might want to check with Nissan to reconfirm it's compatible. Many are. I'm using a Lucas one that is.

Nope - that is BS. My dealer uses Genuine MTF for the tranny and Penzoil for the rear.

Which dealer do you go to? When you went in for service does your receipt state NISSAN oil as parts being used?

I have a hard time believing that. Original Nissan spec MTF gear oil is only available by the barrel and no dealership wants a barrel of gear oil hanging around for only MTF changes. Nissan MTF oil is a special blend of Esso gear oils and is NOT available to the general public.
