From what I know:
1. Have the car on and plug it in
2. turn the car off and turn the key to the on position but not started
3. turn the unit on and let it fully load up (I think this one turns on when it's plugged in)
4. Just go through the menus and find read codes and it will tell you the code error.

I think you just need to do that the first time you use it though. So any other time just plug it in and read codes. Mines not here right now it's in my brothers car so I can't verify what each button says.

I can meet up with you if you're having trouble though.
Thanks for the offer Blaine, I'll give it a try tomorrow after work.

I don't mean to threadjack, but I have the Elmscan 5 in my TL and works great!! you can write custom software (if you have the sdk kit for it.. ) or download/buy software that can pretty much get you any type of information from your car via LAPTOP.

http://store.mp3car.com/OBDPro_USB_O..._p/com-091.htm - 85USD

http://store.mp3car.com/ElmScan_5_US..._p/com-039.htm - 130USD

I would prefer these, since many of you probably own a laptop and can easily keep track of everything. You can erase codes as well, pretty much keep a LOG of your daily engine activity. Fuel consumption, etc.

Anyone who might be interested in this, I can show you a demo

The OP's model does a great job as well, but limited information.. and its an insanely low price compared to other models so thanks 4 letting us know

and for those of you, who have FI and are interested in digital gauges, check out:

http://store.mp3car.com/PhotoGallery...Code=SOF%2DDCL

there are other products out there, but the best part about this is, you can customize it and if your into programming/graphics editing... you can make one of the sickest gauges using FLASH ... contact me, if your interested.

Ok, so I read the manual, way too much info for this OF. I believe I located the port. Just couldn't bring myself to plug it in. Worried I'll press the wrong button and FU the G. It's not like taking apart pieces that I can see and replace if I FU. I don't do plumbing either.
Willin to drive and buy beverages.

You really can't mess it up, there is no buttons to push that can damage the car.

I guess a problem could happen when erasing codes. I'll just not erase anything.

Well it depends, it will tell you what the code is first. It only brings up error codes.

If it is a problem the car will find it again as soon as the car is shut off and restarted. If it doesn't find it again, it wasn't a major problem.

So I did it. Code PO442
$10
Evap. Emissions system leak detected small leak

When I started the G I heard a new sound, a little rattle and not the regular rumble at first, then it sounded normal. Guess I need to check the exhaust system, sounds loose.
Could it be an exhaust leak that caused the code?

When I was done, I shut off the engine and pulled the reader out. Should I have tried to erase the code?

A code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
A loose or improperly affixed gas cap Since I smelled a little gas, this seems unlikely, no?
A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube
Other small leak in EVAP system
Faulty vent o-ring seal
Guess it's off the the mechanic.

So I went for my emissions test on Friday and then to the MTO to get my sticker. The G passed, very clean, 5 ppm in the first two categories. When I asked about the gas cap, they said that was the first thing they test, so it is fine. Means it's something else. Taking it in today to have them ( been our family mechanic for 20 years and I'm gonna give them a shot at the G, little nervous though) check it our and prob. do a smoke test.

Yes, a couple of years ago. As it turns out, when I started the car to head out to the mechanic ....... the middle part of the display stayed black. I hit the fan button and everything came back and then I looked at the main display and NO CHECK ENGINE SOON light anymore. Cancelled the appointment. Must have been the gas cap improperly tightened. Maybe I'll spring for a new one and clean the neck.
