Two young men face street-racing charges after they were nabbed driving side by side at an unbelievably reckless 150 km/h over the posted speed limit on a Rexdale street, police say.
The pair of leadfoots were heading into the city from Woodbridge around 11:30 p.m. Thursday, heading south on Martin Grove Rd. past Steeles Ave. W., when they were clocked at an astonishing 200 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, Toronto Police said.
"When I heard about this my eyes nearly popped out of my head," Traffic Services Sgt. Tim Burrows said yesterday. "It's four times the posted speed limit and they were coming into a residential area."
The veteran cop, who thought he had seen it all when it came to speeders, said it was a good thing the two drivers were stopped because they could have caused untold carnage travelling at such speeds.
He said Const. Sue Fisher, of 23 Division's Traffic Unit, was stopped in an unmarked cruiser in the northbound lanes of Martin Grove, just south of Steeles, when she spotted the two cars flying toward her.
The quick-thinking officer, whose vehicle was equipped with mobile radar, activated it and got a reading of 200 km/h as the new red Mini Cooper and the purple Honda Prelude SR-V whizzed by.
"They didn't even realize they were passing a police car," Burrows said.
Fisher immediately spun her unmarked car around to give chase and caught up to the speedsters soon after, he said. One of the drivers was stopped at a red light and the other, who had apparently made it through the intersection before the light changed, pulled a U-turn and drove back north on Martin Grove.
"The two cars basically came right to her," Burrows said. "It was a combination of good police work and good luck."
The drivers, 20 and 21, said they weren't racing and denied knowing each other.
"One of them is from the Netherlands and acted surprised to learn he was not allowed to drive like that in Ontario," Burrows said.
Holland actually has speed limits similar to Ontario and even highways there have a maximum of 120 km/h.
Burrows said Traffic Services was called in to investigate because of the excessive speed involved.
He shudders to think what might have happened to other motorists and any pedestrians had either of the drivers been forced to make a sudden manoeuvre at 200 km/h.
Under ideal conditions, with full braking, Burrows said reconstructionists estimate it takes more than two football fields and about 71/2 seconds to bring a car to a stop.
"After five seconds of 100% braking, you would still be going about 70 km/h," he explained. "And unless you're using high-performance tires, your tires would most likely explode if you slammed on your brakes at that speed.
"At the very least, the tires would most likely keep spinning even though the rims are stopped."
The two drivers, whose names were not released, have had their licences suspended for seven days.
"They also both had to call their older brothers and explain their cars were being impounded," Burrows said, adding neither actually owns the car they were driving.

That's a scary report.
I'm not so sure about exploding and spinning tires but non the less those speeds in low speed zones is very alarming.
Driving borrowed cars like that really tops it off.

Brutal! I hope these two punks get their licensed taken away for a VERY long time and get HUGE fines as well. Dumbfcks like this really **** me off. And WTF is up with this comment?
. What a dumb@ss!

damn, i never thought a mini could even go that fast...
mind you though i don't believe 200 is accurate (mobile radar is BS if you ask me, I got pinged like that too once).
Regardless, they must have been doing at least 150+ which is by all means retarded.

Mobile radar can be off by 20-30 kms, could be more could be less than the actual speed.
The part about blowing up tires and braking in 2 football fields is not realistic at all.

Typical.Like you said, real dumb@sses. I'll be very disappointed if they don't see jail time, a big fine, and a longtime licence suspension.
It's a pity the cars weren't theirs in which case they would be confiscated (permanently).
Tough, I know, but isn't it about time? These morons are as bad as drunk drivers.

And bring that back to this situation.
If the tires are inflated to 32psi most tires have a warning on them saying not to inflate over 45 or 50 psi going 200kph and braking puts similar forces on the tire as the transport truck tire. It's the heating up of the rubber which causes the serious threat plus any additional road hazards like pot holes. Hit one of those under hard braking after heating up a tire BOOM. -Think of it as a bottle of pop shake it for 5 minutes constantly then cut the top off quickly, you'll get a very similar reaction
ROFL... ****en morons. i'm not suprised about either of those cars being able to go at those speeds... most cars on the road can hit that speed eventually...
as for the car being taken away.. i was told by an officer that it didn't matter who's car it was.. the car can be taken away forever or crushed regardless of the owner.... someone please shine some light on this since its always good to know..
thanks 4 the great explanation troy, totally agree with u...
i know that rd very well and though i don't support their driving, its not 50km/h all the way... they probably just hit the residential area considering this happened around steeles.... can't blame the media for making it seem bigger then it is... north of steeles... up until highway 7, that rd is like a mini highway... but i think the speed limit is around 60-70... not sure 100%... but 200 or even 150 is just ****en stupid. i'm a lil disappointed with the 7 day suspension.. thats NOTHING! by the time, they get over this and deal with lawyers etc., it will be a week.. i think something like this should result in a minimum 6 months suspension!

jail time for speeding which isnt technically a crime is a dum idea but they can be charged with endangerment of life which is a crime, its just they usually dont have enough information to convict these ppl and im sure they will get off in this case they both said the right things to get out of it. i know 2 ppl that got caught in a similar situation at a skyline meet they both won in court cuz the cop count prove it.
colors are very hard to prove at nite too. my friends yellow 300zx wen he got pulled over for "illegal mod check" which he didnt have cuz he has a non twin turbo completely bone stock they thought it was white cuz i was the first car and i asked the cop if he was signaling for me to stop and he said no the white car which confused me but he meant my friends yellow 300zx behind me. he just hit a skunk at the time it was awesome to see the cops face wen he tried to look under the front bumper for an intercooler
