Ohh Canadian Tire, How wroth I am with thee.

So, it starts out with me receiving a 5/16th Copper ISO spacer.

I am overjoyed. But a tool I am missing is a torque wrench that does inch-pounds. (From 30 - 250 to be exact) I remember that there was one on sale at Canadian Tire.
So I pick it up. So now I am waiting for another member of the forum (BurntRenolds) because he wanted to see me install.

So we get together today and start the install and everythign is going smoothly. After installing the thermal gasket under the lower plenum. Its time to re-install the bolts that go there. So out comes the new torque wrench. Set it to 40 in-lbs and start going on bolt #1. As it start to get hard to turn the wrench does a loud click. So I assume that's it. On to bolt #2. Same deal go until the click. On to bolt #3, click. As I am tightening bolt #4 and there goes the expected click, bolt #3 jumps out of the hole.

I freeze.... look at BurntRenolds and then take the bolt out. Its snapped about 3/16 from the top of the thread.

I start shaking... I look back at the settings for the torque wench. Nope its set to 40 in-lbs. So I am like WTF...

Now, as I have no vehicle, BurntRenolds kindly takes me to the Canadian Tire of purchase with the plan of returning the wrench and getting a new one as it must be defective. And stopping by Infiniti to see about some new bolts...

As I grab an employee to open the case with the tools I notice that they have the same wrench but with a sticker overtop of the its specifications.

It says good for 30 - 250 FOOT POUNDS.

I am now PISSED.

Update. I got some temporary bolts from S&B Simpson in Brampton so everything is back together and the car still runs. I was able to remove the pieces of the bolts that were still stuck in my motor. The only problem with these new bolts are that they aren't coated and will rust. And with it being an aluminum block, probably pretty fast. So Nissan is express shipping some new replacement OEM bolts from Vancouver and they should be in on Friday / Saturday.

I hand torqued everything with a nut driver. I also purchased a new wrench from Jet that does exactly as I need inch-pounds. I had them verify it before I spent any more money. Once BurntRenolds sends me the pics he took I will add them to my own and post them here.

Here is a pic of the Torque wrench I bought there

Here is the pic of the 'new' one on the shelf.

OMG.... I would be supremely pissed!

Sorry, I know it's a little late in your case DqF, but for others.....
....FWIW when looking at a TQ wrench, the size of the drive gives you an indication of the range for the wrench.

And don't always believe the specs you get in non-oem literature. I once broke 2 studs on my 325 'cuz there was an error in the torque spec for the cam cover bolts (12 instead of 6-7 lb/ft) in the Bentley manual. The stealer laughed...

The drive was 3/8s its a small torque wrench so I figured it would be perfect.

Ouch, I feel bad for you. Try to do it right and purchased the wrong torque wrench.
Note: Make sure you replace all of the studs you tightened with that torque wrench, even the ones that didn't break since they have been over-torqued and could fail on you later.

You must have bought a mastercraft brand. I've used two already and they both failed (improper torque or doesn't click at all). I bought a cheap princess auto one and that never failed on me.

I knew what happened as soon as you said inch pounds. I hope you got it fixed easily.

^ that's where I got mine as well.

FWIW...
Do a trial torque before you do one for real.

If you're used to a large TQ wrench,
you will likely find yourself blowing right past the click w/o even noticing.

i purchased a 3/8" torque wrench from ct in the past. it was horrible. the clicks were barely audible. almost stripped a couple bolts on my bike because of it. i've found the mit one's from bosstoolsupply.com a hell of a lot better in reliability/accuracy, and their pricing is still very aggressive against ct.

I hate those moments... like last week, I put my spc spacer in the wrong direction behind the caliper and tried to move the car... with new rotors... and Brembo brakes.

I was confused before with in-lbs... the wrench i got was a baby wrench.

Did you choose the wrench or did you ask them specifically for in-lbs?

I specifically asked for inch-pounds. And the packaging has that as the specs on it.
