Computer advice?

It seems we need an IBM(desktop or NB) or such computer at home now. We have been a Mac family since we joined the computer age. Nancy and I both use IBM's at work and we see some benefit in being able to do some work at home as winter is slowly(I hope!) approaching. I've been looking at some used stuff from a storefront ($600 for everything including wireless). Well, I'm pretty confused now. We use the Lenovo at work. N says buy new
Anyone have any thoughts re new vs. used or connections in the business that I could buy from?
Thanks for your time.

I would definitely buy new Sam.
There are usually deals to be had for very little extra $ that you would pay for used.
It's worth it for the warranty and you'll also have the latest tech.

Other than the big stores (BBuy & Future)
...TigerDirect.ca is a good source

I agree, buy new . I love my Lenovo T400. They aint pretty but they are tough and reliable. Use it for AutoCAD, daily, without fail.

being a computer enthusiast and builder for about 4 years now, i find that buying it new is always better. i wouldnt recommend futureshop or bestbuy as i always find better deals at the computer shops.

Tigerdirect.ca is an awesome place to buy. great deals, great selection, lots of stores in the GTA.

recently though, i have been shopping through ncix.com. its a canadian company based in BC, which means, you dont have to pay provincial tax on parts. my last shipping charges was $70 for a huge and heavy computer build for a friend. it was roughly 80lbs.

if you want i can probably find a deal for you, or buy separate parts and build it together myself. most of the time, it will be cheaper than futureshop's or bestbuy's computers.

One more vote for the new side. I'm firmly on side now, no doubt about it. Thats a very gracious offer David. I may just take you up on it.
It's a great feeling when there's someone knowledgeable who's willing to share. Hey, that's what this forum is all about, eh.

Why IBM? If your going to go with a pre-made computer get yourself a Dell or somthing like that.

No one buy's ibm's anymore.

Personally I have never owned a premade computer. I have purchased and assembled all my desktops from scratch. You get everything you want and don't get anything you don't need.... (Like stupid OEM Bloatware that is loaded on all of those PC's)

www.pcvonline.com

go there... the cheapest place for individual parts as well as custom made pcs. when you see something you like, give me a shout (not them). i'll take off the tax (13%)

this will be the cheapest solution i can think off. I have an account with CDW/SUPERCOM/TIGERDIRECT , but you will have to pay taxes , longer waiting time but will be a LIL bit cheaper (maybe 10-20$ tops) compared to pcvonline.com.

t/c

p.s: they assemble it for free so you can actually choose your individual parts for your system build. you can even look at other places and let me know what your interested in, i can then clone the same specs and get it cheaper from pcv for you.

Canada Computer is another good option and they charge a small installation fee but usually have good deals.

I'm an I.T. guy. You sound like the average user. My recommendation buy a Dell or HP in the mid price range $600-900 for something reliable. I work in a building with 2200 computers and the Dells and HP's are rock solid. Being an I.t. guy I would build one from the ground up.
