p.s: i know goal averages are important in the groups but if we are gonna hope to survive in our national sport by averages, we should not even compete.

that 18-0 score was i am sorry to say was disgusting. they could have taken it easy on a easy game like this. i know its competition but think about how those other team players feel when they go back to their countries. I watched one of the players from slovakia and saying " i hope back home they will forgive us for this" . i know we want it a lot, and i am supporting Canada but this is not the olympic spirit and winning is not everything.

As long at tie-breakers are based on point differentials, you're not going to see teams back off.

You don't have to wonder how those teams feel. In a recent European women's hockey tournament that same Slovakian team who's feelings you're so worried about beat a Bulgarian team by a score of 82-0 with something like 139 shots on goal. They were up 31-0 after one period an averaged a goal every 44 seconds. They beat Croatia, Latvia and Italy at that tournament to advance to another qualifying group for a spot at the Olympics. I think those girls might understand competition better than you give them credit for.

In sport there shouldn't be mercy. You're there to do your best and to learn from losses and wins. The tie breaker scoring isn't really my favorite.
I was shocked hearing about correspondence to the Canadian woman's coach condemning her for "allowing" her to champion those big score upsets.

13-0 , I just think winning is not everything you have to respect your opponents. In this case Slovakia seems like deserved this since they tried the same thing on smaller teams.

thanks for the information, i did not know Slovakia had the same thing, i guess Karma catches u some where and some time. but again it does not rationalize the behavior. in Soccer Germany did the same thing a year ago with a really small country (either san marino or liechenstein)

IMHO, winning a game handily has nothing to do with a lack of respect for the other team. Being cocky and boastful about it does. It shows you are more skilled, better prepared, stronger faster etc. and/or more determined which is the objective of the event.
Back on track.....add another gold to list. Congrats to Jon Montgomery in the skeleton....

Where do you draw the line in "respecting your opponents"? Should a speed skater slow down a little if they are well ahead of an opponent? What "behavior" are you referring to? What is a "smaller team"?

I remember the European basketball teams getting their butts kicked. Now they routinely put quality players in the NBA and now they are a force to be contended with in the Olympics.
Taking it easy on the new teams doesn't do them any good

Yeah, that's tough.
We've had some real disappointments in the last number of days - on the slopes and on the ice.
Getting set for the game tonight. Let's hope Canada has the game face on.

I was really disappointed in some of the other athletes, though...Morrison is blaming his training program, two out of five Cdns in the men's short track final and NO medals.
But Montgomery was a star and is a real Canadian character, hopefully we have better things to come in the remaining days.
