The other thing I keep hearing on several boards is wheel failure after powder coating.
I know a lot of guys say it's no problem, but I've seen to damn many posts about this to ignore it entirely.
(usually happens at the track)

My PC'd wheels turned out awsome. I've ran them all winter too and they still look fresh out of the booth. I definetly recommend! Can't beat 35 bucks a wheel either.

I have heard the same mixed feelings about the damage that may be caused by the baking process. I heard one Subaru owner phoned BBS about powder coating the OEM BBS wheels they said flat out DO NOT powder coat them

metal becomes more brittle when it's heated up, but i never would have thought that the baking process is hot enough to actually change the molecular structure of the metal

I happen to do my research recently on this topic as well and found two reliable sources in my opinion

Metal Coaters
www.metalcoaters.ca

and

Quys Coating

I really don't understand it either.
The unsettling thing is that I have seen threads here, as well as BMW, M-B & Porsche forums where guys have fractured wheels after PC.
Usually after wheels have seen more stress than you would see for normal DD. (at the track etc)

It's interesting about the BBS comments.

It could be the way the PC was done how much heat etc.
Wheels (used) could have had prior imperfections that were exacerbated by the process.
Too many variables and no conclusive data.

BUT, there's just too many of these occurrences for me to feel comfortable about the process.

Interesting thread Ian.
I have also read of wheel failures on other sites in the past with PC'd wheels, it would make me hesitant on this procedure.

Yeah, I'm not sure what to think Wayne.

I was thinking about getting the OE wheels on the new ride done in a gunmetal,
which would look great with the white car.
The wheels on the car are absolutely mint though, so I'm hesitant to do anything.

Ian, PC would look great but you picked up my thoughts in your above statements 100%
I would be inclined to go with a quality paint job + clear coat.
