3rd Gear Crunch

I need a plan guys,

My 03 6mt coupe (96,000kms) just began to crunch 3rd gear this Tuesday

The day before, I brought my car into the dealer for a synthetic oil change and to have it registered in the database.

The car didn't do this before the oilchange, and i don't know if it is just a coincidence or not.

Either way, i need to get this fixed. Considering the car is a year out of powertrain warranty, is there anyway that nissan/infiniti would cover this?

I hate that it grinds!!!!!! it kills me! like seeing your kid get punched in the face and you cant do anything!

Any ideas of what to do?

for now i will lay off any fast shifts into 3rd.

***Also, new addition: could it be a result of a worn out clutch? and I brought the car into infiniti to have a mechanical inspection and to get it certified.

Thanks!

I'd say the lube is your problem. I have had plenty of experience with crunchy transmissions after somebody used a hypoid oil instead of the proper lube. Synchros need friction for the cone clutches to operate properly. Some lubes are just too slippery, hypoid oils in particular are designed to be slippery and aren't always suitable for MT use.

Ahh, I really hope this is a quick fix for it, and that it isn't a syncro problem.

Any suggestions for what I should buy for it and where I could pick this stuff up?

Thanks for input!

Do you know what they used in the transmission? Re-reading your OP I see you had it in for a synthetic oil change but don't specifically state the transmission oil was changed. Obviously if they didn't change the gearbox oil there's no link.

really hope you don't have the 3rd gear grind, it is common for the 03, before i bought mine from another guy, I had him get the whole tranny replaced to correct the synchro issue as I noticed the grind while test driving..... the dealer charges an arm and leg but luckily it was cover under warranty at the time, if your out of warranty there is no way the dealer will cover it

I had the same problem on the last month of my powertrain warranty (plus obtuse gear noise). Hyatt Infiniti replaced my gearbox.

wait - was the engine oil replaced, or the gearbox oil? i can't tell from the OP. if just the engine oil then there can be no link. if the gearbox oil was changed that could be your problem.

either way it is highly unlikely you will be covered under warranty. do some research and look at replacing the tranny fluid with a higher friction fluid for some extra life.

the engine oil, but never had this problem until after the change. Maybe something when they checked fluids???

It is possible that its unrelated.

It feels like the clutch isn't totally released when its actually pinned to the ground and i'm putting it into 3rd.

ahhhh i hope its not in need of pricey above $1000 repairs cause i just bought a whole bunch of stuff for the car.

I avoid 3rd like the plague!!!!!

Thanks for responses...

I had the too slippery oil issue with my trans and Motul gear 300. However if the tranny oil wasn't changed...you have the 3rd gear grind of death .

See if you can pick up a used tranny from a wrecker.
