Wheels and Tires in USA

Has anyone on here purchased rims and tires or just tires in the states. I have a friend I will be visiting in the states and I was thinking of ordering a rim and tire package and installing it at his house. If I get the wheels a bit dirty before crossing the border and I cut off the little rubber 'hairs' around the outside of the new tires do you think I will have any issue getting across the border. I'm not sure if it is worth the risk but the prices in the states seem much better especially now the dollar is around 97 cents again. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this good or bad. Thanks.

I bring new wheels over the border 2-3 times a week.

Don't do it, you will get ****ed so hard if they catch you.

PM me what you want and I'll see what I can do for you.

They can't prove whether you bought them in Canada or the U.S. Are you going to be carrying over your stock wheels?

They hassled me 3 weeks ago cuz my rims were clean and even though my rims are 2 years old, the officer called over 2 other officers to validate if they were new, I was laughing the whole (felt flattered), since they saw no stock wheels they had nothing on me and let me go.

Thanks for the advise. I'm visiting a friend and would leave the stock 17" wheels down there (he has space in his basement to store them but I haven't asked so he may not be thrilled keeping them taking up space) OR I may look for some close to bald tires and old steel rims drive it down there on them and then get my buddy to put them on craigslist or something to sell them for something close to what I paid. I would be coming back across with a seven year old and my wife and would throw some dirty water on the rims and cut off the rubber hairs. I don't think they would have anything on me.

i had new tires put on the wife's CRV on a quick trip down to Bellingham. they would have cost $1100 in Vancity. they cost $540 down south, with a free alignment check and hand car wash. the tires were from Discount Tire, who matched Tire Rack pricing. i recommend US tire shopping to anyone, a great experience.

Thanks. Was there any issue with the tire identification number on the tire sidewall? Someone told me they can look at that number to determine the tire was sold in the US, even on a second or subsequent trip (if you get through the first time) they can then demand to see proof that you paid tax\ duty on it

Buyring tires from the States is the way to go. When I had my G, I had all four replaced for $780 during a shopping trip to Grove City. It rained a little so by the time I got to the boarder my tires looked old so no problems at all.

We need a set of new tires, 235/65/16, for our 07 Honda Odyssey (no minivan jokes please). It's a lease return in 7 months and the thought of putting new rubber on it here for around $850 just kills me.
I am considering driving over to Western New York where I can have the Yokohama AVID TOURING-S can be had for $90 a piece. What sales taxes do they have over there...if any. Even if I claim them on the way home the HST and Duty will only add about another $60.
Can ANYONE in Southern Ont. come close?

You could also get some used rubber for even less. Check out craigslist there tends to be quite a few places offering tires with 75-90% tread on them for good prices on that site.

By the way I decided not to get the tires in the US mainly because I would have to leave the OEM tires and rims at my friends place and that would be a PITA to get them back as I don't want to sell them. It's a shame too because we went through the border yesterday in about 45 seconds with no issues.

I have looked at a few used sets around here and none of them are very good...4 to 5/32. and they want $45ea. plus bal & inst & tax.
Unfortunately 235/65/16 is not a very commonly used tire size which reduces the amount of used ones out there. $90 for the new Yokos is looking pretty good and they are rated far higher than the OEM Michelins.
I will check C.L. thanks.
