Front grille paint..just not staying on

Folks need some suggestions..

I dont seem to be having any luck with getting the black paint on the grille to stay on for more than 2 months or so.

granted i only paid like 50 bux or so to my mechanic to have to blacked out (thought that would suffice, but it doesnt seem to working out that well).
I'm starting to get tired of having the paint flaking and the stone chips are not helping either.
its starting to look real ugly now.

I have googled and read a few guides on painting the grille and seem to grasp what is needed, but i dont have the tools/supplies or the place to attempt this DIY.

so if any1 on here as got their's painted and seem to have got good results, could you please point me in that direction and how much would you say is a fair price for having this properly done (like the preping with sand paper, de-greasing, applying primer, adding adhesive components and 2-3 coats of the black paint).

Thanks

poly is much more difficult to paint, flaking occurs much more often

do you have a stock grill of polly like redpearl mentioned, couldnt tel from your post, if its poly flex additive is a necessity, if its stock, just good sanding, primer, paint , clear.

Its the stock chrome grille.

I think the issue mite lie with the fact that i wanted a flat/matte look, and my mechanic didnt put clear coat on, as it would make it glossy (thats wht he said..lol).

^pmed you, almost all the grilles ive done are in matte black, the clear does give it abit of a shine but its really subtle. Makes it satinish, but its can be done without the clear.

the clear just gives you extra protection against stonechips, wont make it stop peeling, its peeling cause you guy didnt sand and prep the surface, so the paint didnt adhere properly

I did mine about 18 months ago and have had only 1 small chip about the size of a pencil eraser. Prepping was the time consumer. I did it right on the car, w/o detaching the grill. I used oversized trashbags with blue painters tape and covered the hood, lites, and sides pretty well. That took about 15 minutes.

Then the grille was wet sanded very carefully with fine grit paper. It took about 20 minutes to sand thoroughly, then it was washed and dried 2X. It sat in the sun for about an hour and then 2 coats of primer were put on. I waited about 30 minutes between each coat. Finally I used Duplicolor, glossy black, and put 3 coats with 30 minutes between coats. Finished it with clearcoat (2 coats).

It sat in the garage overnite to make sure it dried thoroughly before driving it. I didn't go the matte route, it made the grill stand out too much and had a slight greyish tint. But that's just a preference thing.

Good luck. The entire process took about 4 hours, and 85% of that was really only in waiting for things to dry. So I read between coats.

By the way, I did it in my yard on the lawn, so space wasn't an issue. My best advice is to take your time and make sure there isn't any wind blowing.

I did this (http://gshack.org/?p=196) and it still looks as good as day one. It held up through the harsh winter salt and grime. Call it what you will but it looks good far away and close up. I can take it off if/when I get tired of it.

Bhav, you don't need to use a flex agent in any kind of poly parts except for a bumper where it will obviously flex often. With the grille it needs to be prepped properly and then an adhesion promoter needs to be applied before the primer.

Try doing it yourself. I drive alot on hwy and my grill is still good. I used... Dare I say... Plastidip. Did it myself with minimal prep. No sanding, and looks great! It's also a textured black. Did it for 12 bucks and in a quarter of the time that these guys took. Good luck n take the time to remove it from the car. It doesnt take much.
