Terrible massacre in Mayerthorpe Alta.

So sorry to hear of the death of 4 young RCMP officers killed while exercising a drug bust in the small town of Mayerthorpe Alberta.

A single suspect with a high powered rifle killed the officers, then killed himself.
So sad.

I saw that on the news last night....terrible. I believe all of the officers were quite young also. Senseless killings like this are usually about either drugs or money.....brutal world we live in sometimes!

Very sad news. It's surprising that they realize after 4 members of the RCMP are killed that they say "we need to re-evaluate stiffer penalties for such operations". Why are they taking a reactive approach, instead of being pro-active?

From my understanding, there is always a lobby by police for stiffer penalties and broader power to excercise policing.
This sad event just strengthens their arguement for such measures.

I know from experience on the Fire Department that we were constantly battling for better measures, stronger laws, better equipment, and more money to better protect the public and our firefighting force.

It's been my experience that these necessary changes are dealt with usually after such a tragedy. A very sad fact.

Actually, I knew about the Lobby groups by Police and the Fire Departments, but I should have been more specific, when I said them, I meant the Government.

I agree, it always takes a tragedy to make some officials to open their eyes.

In that case the answer to your question is 'red tape' (IE- politics) & money.....plain and simple.
It's a shame isn't it.......

I don't think it was about a money, I think it was about the training these officers weren't trained enuff or not prepared to run the operation or how the operation should run. Lack of training the RCMP.

Anyhow, I saw the news and maybe I wasn't cleared what had happened to RCMP clearly.

May god be with them.

Sandip, Yes God speed for sure. Poor young families......was a terrible loss.

I agree that their inexperience may have played a part in this, but from my experience, it's hard to prepare for all contingencies.
Let's hope lessons were learned by this ordeal and that there will not be a repeat.

Peace be with their families.

Colin

they need to seriously get a handle on weapons in canada imo. look at all the recent crime here in toronto involving firearms. it seems to be getting worse month-by-month. they need to start a good prevention system before this gets out of hand. i don't want to hear about another person being shot by some 18 year-old hoodlum .
