The vinegar helps break down the detergents so the towels don't harden up; so really it's just to keep them soft.

I thought the vinegar was supposed to go in the rinse cycle? Thats what I've always done because it was recommended on autopia

You can do either; if you want to wait until the rinse cycle that's probably better. I do too many loads, so I just put it all in up front.
