Claybar the rims?

I have Volk rims on my G and I am just wondering if I can claybar the lip?
I've heard YES but also NO (Might damage the clear coat)
so can I claybar the lip or not?
and is it safe to use car wax to wax the rims?

Thanks for the help!!!!!

claybaring the rims may also apply (correct me if i'm wrong) to body paint. both have clear coat. if you claybar without the appropriate claybar wax, you may remove a large amount of clearcoat. in other words, i believe it is safe and just dont over clay it. maybe 4-5 swipes shall do the trick.

if you do, just make sure you use enough lube, just as you should when you clay the body.

it's safe on the anodized lips. i had a slight haze to my volks and it took it right out. don't forget the lube

griot's has very soft claybars that they claim will not even remove wax.

try that for delicate surfaces.

maybe I am mistaken, but my understanding was that the purpose of a claybar is to remove contaminants & impurities like paint over spray, tar, sap, etc. Anything that is designed to remove this should definetely remove wax, if it's not then I would say that it is worthless.

Now if you're saying that it only should be used on delicate surfaces (like wheels) then that's another story, but I wouldn't use that and expect it to do what I wnated to on the actual body.

Those who are more knowledgeable please correct me if I'm wrong.

Claybars work by shaving off contaminants in the surface that stick out past the paint with abrasives, depending on the size of the abrasives, they can themselves shave the top layer(ie wax). A very delicate claybar, which contains very fine abrasives, will not be able to shave very much off the top layer, which is why they work so slow on larger contaminants.

Doesn't matter either way, unless you are using an aggressive claybar, either a delicate or mild claybar will be safe for anodized wheels with enough lube, I've done some major decontamination work on some used wheels before, worked great

^try it and see.

No one will be able to answer that for you without seeing the dirt and knowing what you used etc.

as mentioned above, claybars are not all alike. some are course, some are
very gentle. griot's is a fail-safe system (their entire detailing stuff) so
you can use it on delicate paints.

the detailing tech at one of the details sessions said to me and everyone
there that their clay does not remove wax. from wat i can see, there is
wax remaining after using their claybar, but to how much? i dont know.

i usually wax after clay anyways.

I wouldn't! Chrome wheels use chrome cleaner/polish, that should take care
of your wheels!

Claybar vs Volk Rims..........?

Anything you get on those high dollar Volks should be removed with only
water/soap and only when the rims are cool. We've seen many members
mess up their rims my using detergents and related items that were too
harsh for the clearcoat. After they're clean it would be a good idea to
protect them with something like Wheelwax, that's what I use!
