Re: QUICK!!! What % Tint?!?
50% is really light for the sides and back, you might not even notice it. 35% is generally the legal limit for tint and I would recommend getting that. 50% is sometimes used on the windshield, although this is not legal. I have 35% on my TB w/ black interior and it looks good. The dark interior really makes it look darker then it is.
Re: QUICK!!! What % Tint?!?
ahh Jersey tint laws suck and so do the cops.
no tint on the side windows is legal. And if you have any, the cops will probably hassle you for it. I'd go with as light as possible.
If you don't care about the ticket, go with the 35%.

go with 35%. Thats what I have here in So Cal, and I haven't had any problems...
50% will be way too light, you may regret getting such a light tint later on...
good luck.

Re: QUICK!!! What % Tint?!?
There is a lot of misinformation out there on tinting, so beware. California is very similar to NJ regarding tint laws, so I've been quite careful in deciding on what to do. After researching the laws, talking to my police officer pals on their ticke-writing habits, and several tint shop-gurus, I've decided.
All three tint shops I went to said the same thing: Almost every ticket they hear of (a lot) for tinting is for 35% jobs on the front two windows. They all also said they hardly ever put anything below 35% on the fronts, because they try to talk the customer out of it for safety reasons (which is why these laws exist). Over the years they all have had to peel/wash/remove many 35% and lower jobs for fix-it tickets that required DMV inspection prior to reissue of registration and it's not fun. The last thing I want to do is pay someone to take a razor blade and solvent to my G.
Tint appearance depends a lot on the light geometry of the vehicle, the color of the interior, and the light sources that reflect from that interior. Darker interiors make the tint appear far darker than light interiors (eg., Graphite vs. Willow). The G coupe has very limited light sourcing, which also makes the tint appear quite dark. The rear window, while at a very flat angle, is quite small, and has a large dot-matrix pattern at the top already, which is minimally represented around the perimeter. The rear quarters are tiny, and similarly dot-matrixed/shaded. All this means the G takes relatively high-transmittance tints quite well, meaning it looks darker than most other cars with the same tint.
Differences in tint shades are most noticeable at high noon, with exponentially decreasing difference into dusk. At night they all look quite similar from outside the vehicle, with virtually no light reflected from the inside. The major difference is that you can see around corners with >35%T film.
All that said, I decided 35%T on the rear three windows, and 50%T on the doors. I'm using 3M non-metal film material since I have the Navi. I'll post pics when it's done (04/08/04).

Re: QUICK!!! What % Tint?!?
I suggest going with 35%. 50 is too light. I went with 35 and have had 2nd thoughts about not doing 20. Although, I've never been hassled by the cops with the 35.
Re: QUICK!!! What % Tint?!?
my thoughts were the same as yours when i got my coupe tinted. i decided to go with the 50%. in retrospect, i wish i had gone a little darker. maybe not 35%, but something in between if that's possible. i was worried about getting pulled over as well, but i think now if i went a little darker, it wouldn't have created more attention for the cops.
Re: QUICK!!! What % Tint?!?
I know i'm late but i went 5% all the way around. To be honest i kind of wish i could get the side windows darker, i don't like to be able to see in them. I also hardly ever have the car out when the sun isn't up so that may make a difference myself

Re: QUICK!!! What % Tint?!?
I'm thinking about tinting the car sometime down the road, but looking up Minnesota law it appears that the most allowed is 50%. Would that even look like I have any tint? I don't want a really dark tint because I've been in a dark tinted car and it sucks at night. But if 50% will seem like no tint at all then I guess I shouldn't even bother with it.

Re: QUICK!!! What % Tint?!?
The darker the car is on the inside, the darker any tint will look from the outside. Going lower %T on the rear three windows will make whatever you put on the front two appear lower %T as well. It just depends on how much contrast between the front and rears you want (if any).
The G I saw with 35/50 looked very slick and I could hardly tell the difference between the fronts and rears. I'd like to go 35 all around, but looking a pinch cooler at noon is simply not worth the risk to me.
Make sure to get non-metal film if you have the Navi. It may also affect your radio reception.
