Would using a sponge with a rough surface scratch...
..the bumper.
My only complaints with washing the car is removing the bugs. I think the only way I can remove them is by using some type of rough surface. I'm obviously not gonna use something made out of aluminum. Just wondering if it will damage the bumpers paint.

Even the softest microfiber can scratch your paint when you apply too much pressure or use it to drag debri along your paint with it. There is a bug remover product thread open with some product recommendations. It would be safer to use a dedicated bug remover to soak in and make it easier to remove them with less scrubbing.

I use Poorboys Bug Squash and it works great for removing all the bug crap from your front bumper and grille. Btw, I can't believe you even mentioned aluminum in the same post as detailing your car.
Scratches & Swirls=Nightmares!
So you don't scratch your clear coat, soak those bugs a lot using the typical
car wash soap and carefully give them a blast with a pressure hose. Then
load up your sponge with water and carefully (again) wipe off what's left.
The last thing you want to do is get aggressive scrubbing your paint...
