Yes rubbing compound is fine.. I use cleaner wax and it works perfectly.

I've been using an 8:1 cut of Chemical Guys Grim Reaper APC and water, and 0000 steel wool. Then I'll lightly polish with P21s finish restorer, then Poorboy's World Wheel Sealant. I've had some pretty awesome results with that method.
