how to detail aftermarket exhaust?

What products do you guys use to detail your aftermarket exhaust? Would a metal polish do or is that too harsh on it?

I want to clean my exhaust cannisters up but want to be sure I use the proper products on them.

Any tips are greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hey man, I usually use a metal polish and some 0000(finest grade) steel wool, but you could also try some metal polish and a rag first and see if that works effectively. Pretty much any metal polish will work, I just use some store bought Meguiar's All Metal Polish, just rub it in until you see the dirt, oxidation, whatever the problem is go away. However, just be aware that if you have a burnt Ti looking exhaust, or some lettering that the metal polish may remove those, so I wouldn't recommend doing it on an exhaust like that. I'm actually not too sure how to approach that, I'm gonna ask on the detailing forum I'm on.

After, you can throw on a quick coat of sealant to protect it, just make sure you use a sealant and not a wax.

Pretty much any sealant. It's not going to last as long due to the high temps of the exhaust, which is why I usually just clean the exhaust when I detail cars. Try a rim sealant, they generally have a higher temperature range, and let us know it works out

i just did mine with some mothers metal polish from walmart (like $4). It worked pretty well. i did the insides with some 0000 steel wool and the outsides with a microfiber.

Mothers metal polish will remove everything on your exhaust system as long as it's semi clean. Using an old sweat shirt seemed to work well today when I was doing mine. Using Mothers on wheels is different since mine no longer have that clear coat on them. Mothers polish can be applied with wheels cold using microfiber towels and removed using the same towel for best results. I get my micro towels from Costco, the price is cheap enough so I don't mind throwing them away when I've finished all 4 rims....

Can I use mothers metal polish on my Rays forged oem 19" wheels, or will this take the clear coat off or is there a clear coat? Is there some other coating? I'm only talking about the outside, not the inside of the wheel.

i would definitely not take the polish to the OEM Rays. They're obviously painted and have a coating. Mother's Metal Polish is simply that--a polish meant for untreated (non-aluminum) metals. Try an all purpose cleaner and seal them up with some wheel wax.

No you can't use Mothers metal polish! With OE wheels just wash them with soap/water (WHEN COLD) and then use a cleaner/wax to keep em looking good.

Hey guys,
my dad told me to use rubbing compound on my exhaust? Would this be a good idea? I tried it on one part of the exhaust and it worked, but im just worried about rust spots.
