Rail Dust Removal

Can rail dust be removed without taking to dealer or professional detailer?

Re: Rail Dust Removal

You can clay bar your car to get the rail dust off. Personally I'd take it to a professional if it's extensive.

If it gets more messed up, you can get the detailers to potentially repaint the car. If you mess it up yourself, you will foot the entire bill.

Best yet is to have the dealer properly prepare the car before it's turned over to you. If they did not properly prepare the car, then request that the dealer professionally detail the car, starting with a claying of the entire car.

Re: Rail Dust Removal

Have you seen a new car on a train car lately???
They pretty much shrink wrap the entire car for shippment with plastic covers. Hood, fenders. trunk.
Clay bar should take care of any leftover contaminates.

Tried the clay bar today with no success. Vehicle is a lease through Nissan's employee program...back to the plant next week.

Re: Rail Dust Removal

Sorry to hear the claying didn't work, so much for the simple solution. Hopefully your car will get fixed up in a jiffy.

Wrah, rail dust is the steel from railroad rails and wheels from the trains used to transport items. The steel gets up in the air and sometimes embeds itself in the metal of the cars being transported. The steel later starts to rust.

Re: Rail Dust Removal

maybe that is the real reason I wanted to remove it from the paint, so I could actually "use" it! ha!

Re: Rail Dust Removal

On a serious note, I think there would be more contamination of brake dust overall, then rail dust......

If you log on to any of the popular detail sights, they talk alot about clay bars and rail/brake dust removal.....

I've noticed my car has a lot of gritty texture build up on the rear bumper......guaranteed its brake dust from the notorious front brakes on this car......
