Transmision Chatter.. oldy but goodie right?
Transmision Chatter.. oldy but goodie right?
At the risk of being flamed, I did do some looking on Z forums through yahoo and in our forums as well so just for my own confirmation..
Manual transmission chatter is normal for our cars right?
I get it on a steep hill in nuetral, in nuetral after a hard drive and some times after releasing a gear and always as I turn the car off.
Im sure this has been addressed so I am exposing my noobness here but Im just wanting to see if that is the consensus.
The delaership says my clutch may be out in 6-8 months becusae of how hard it is to push in, but the car is an 04 and only has 41K on it??
Any thoughts?

Probably means the springs are going bad. I won't say your approaching catasthrophic failure (highly doubt it).
Try this. Turn off the car with the clutch in. Then turn off the car with the clutch out & in neutral. I'll find my transmission book in the mean time.

trying it now brb
To quote Robert Bowne:
A sound like a gear rattle in some cars is actually from the flywheel. ... Dual mass flywheels are made in two parts. The outer ring of the flywheel is a heavy weight that is seperate from the flywheel's hub ... Between the hub and the outer weight are springs or rubber blocks that dampen drivetrain torsional vibrations. This is similar in function tot he sprung hub of some clutch discs.
This setup works well until the parts start to wear. The constant movement between the inner and outer parts of the flywheel wears away metal until play developes in the pivots. Play in the pivots allows the outer ring to rattle back anf forth, creating noise at idle. ... This problem is common on newer BMWs, as well as Corvetts, the manual transmission Cadillac CTS, some Nissans, ...

That, and I'd get a second NON-DEALER opinion. You may want to search this thread for a transmission place. I don't know if anyone has posted a transmission shop but surely someone knows a good place.
Any tech (not the cashier) should be able to come up with a few theory's in just a couple seconds.

Another snipit from Robert Bowne:
It's all very confusing... I just wich I had all my books in .pdf form for simple searching.
Another frequest sign of a bad motor mount is clutch chatter. ... clutch chatter is almost never caused by the clutch disc or flywheel. Usually, it is the result og overly flexable motor mounts ... As the drivetrain takes some of the engine's torque, the pressure on the mounts eases and they spring back. This oscillation continues and the engine and transmission rock back ad forth. As soom as the clutch stops slipping, the mounts return to their neutral position and the oscillation goes away.
yup..and just so you know the stock flywheel is a grand!!! I went after market when they told me that. I have a lot of chatter with the after market but I can also dump the clutch at 3500-4000 rpms without it sticking to the floor.
check out the vendor area and you can get a clutch flywheel package for 750-1000, you will be looking around 400 for labor to have the work done, I recomend getting a s.s clutch line and s.s pivot bolt while your at it.

That is odd, is sounds like the first quote hes saying that a bad fly wheel can cause the issue and the second thta its rarely the fly wheel?
Don't let it scare you. Just because it "wears" to the point of chatter does not mean it's about to give out. BTW, my clutch is also harder to depress than my previous cars. Mine's been making that chatter for the past 3 years. Clutch still grabs strong, and I'm at 81K miles now. At 50K miles, the dealer said I should replace my "worn" clutch. I think I have at least another 10K miles left in it....
