I agree that there's no way that a human can shift as fast, not to mention faster, than a proper DSG. And the DSG technology isn't prohibitively expensive; as Dave has already mentioned, Audi/VW has found a way to get it into the <$30k segment.

However, Klubbheads is also correct on at least one front: the DSG version of the M3 cannot match the ET or trap of a full manual M3. I don't know if that's because of launch control or what.

On another note - I found an interesting entry on dragtimes.com: http://www.dragtimes.com/Infiniti-G3...slip-8069.html

It appears to be an 05 5AT that went 13.019@106.030 with an 1/8th time of 8.421@85.260. I'm not sure it's a 5AT; I just assume so because of the wheels in the picture. The entry lists the track as Infineon. His listed mods are megan midpipe, Injen CAI, and a 75 shot. It's nice to know that my car all motor is "in-the-range-of" that car with a 75 shot.

Lexus has just pulled off an amazing feat with the 8-speed auto in the upcoming IS-F. The ONLY time the torque converter is engaged is 1st gear. Every other gear and the TC is completely locked resulting in a direct connection to the engine like a manual. It rips off shifts in 10ms.

In most larger displacement cars, the sequential/DSG tranny will be faster in a drag race. On a track, it will most likely be quicker too because it can downshift and rev match far better than most any human. There's a reason this technology is used in multi-million dollar racecars and even those trannies don't shift much quicker than the DSG in a $24K VW. I hope my next car will have some sort of sequential tranny.
I can't argue what u are saying as far as track goes (with turns). There is less to worry about and concentrate on turning, braking, accelerating, instead of worrying about revmatch/healandtoe, downshifting etc.
My main question is: If the DSG/SMG trannies are so efficient shouldn't they be faster on the strait line than their conventional tranny counterparts? That is the main question that i have.

Trey I have seen numerous races, even on the highway with 3 honk start between a SMG M3 and Proper 6MT. 6MT always pulls harder for some reason. Doesn't that mean the power delivery from a SMG is not as efficient as in a 6MT? Thats what i meant by it being not as efficient. Same goes for VW GTIs.

Klubby, comparing a 6mt and SMG is essentially identical. Both have clutch/pressure plate type shifting. Your answer is probably in the gearing

Dave's right. Tracks around here don't give a damn. The only guys that I saw wearing helmets were all in the tens. I guess by those standards you don't need a cage unless you're in the 3's.

Whoa! Those are some really good times man. You raised the bar pretty high for the rest of us I'm going to give it a try next week at Moroso, but I don't think I'll get near your new time. Your car traps higher for some reason.

Not all Nitrous companies rate their shot at the rear wheels, in fact, most don't.
