Grinding Gears

Ive been grinding 2nd gear a few times recently. Tracking my car...
Do I look in the differential oil for shavings or do I look in the tranny oil? Im going to replace both oils, I just dont know which one I would notice the shavings in. Also, How much would it be for a new gear set?

Im all done trying to drag this car, its really not meant for it at all...

This car is definatelt meant for dragging...you have to build it that way and know how to drive it that way first

Grinding gears is a transmission thing...

Changing your gears in the diff is about a $1,500 item...

I see your point..
Ive scratched 2nd gear heard about 3-4 times. Is there a way to check for premature wear? I thought that by changing the fluids I might notice something if it was bad. I mean it shifts fine. I just dont want problems down the road...

Without running it through a filter, not really. Also, I am not sure if the drain plug is magnetic or not - if it is, you'll see the shavings there.

Traaditionally - I like removing the pan completely when doing a change like that to get the real story.

I thought the gears are constantly meshed, and that it is
the "synchros" (triple-cone) doing the grinding?

I dont think so...

I think you guys are under estimating the ability for the transmission to take a hit every now and then. I don't think you will shorten the life of your transmission by any great degree by grinding a gear every now and then.

If anything, syncros would be the first thing to go in a manual trans, especially if you are in the habit of skipping gears on an upshift

Just shift in squence when you are downshifting and rev match whenever possible and I think your clutch and trans will live on quite a while.

Wink

A quick 1-2 shift in the G sometimes leads me to a gear grind. I have driven stick for over 10 years and for some reason only have this problem with this car. I miss 2nd a lot! 16k miles and no problem. I wouldn't really worry about it.
