Grinding Gears?

I have only driven my new G for less than 2 weeks and notice that if I don't shift from 1st to 2nd at about 3000RPM, the gears grind a bit during the shift. Is this part of the break in period to get the gears in synch?? I haven't had this problem with my other manual transmission cars in the past.

Dont know but I suffer exactly the same thing as you do.

Everytime I clutch it, i hear this GRRRRR sound coming from the clutch; its only noticeable in my 1st to 2nd shift... and it happens when I clutch in (yes I floor the pedal). I took it to the dealer but we werent able to resolve the problem.

I have about 2000 miles on my 06 now and I feel as if it got better from 1500 miles ago.

Doesnt really bother me know...

I have had mine for about 30,000 miles now and have noticed ever since I got it that it grinds from 5th to 6th gear. It doesn't do it if I push the clutch all the way in for about a second but if I don't pay attention it does.

Same thing...

I occasionally grind the gears going from 2nd to 3rd. This has been happening a few times each week for the past year (ever since I bought my G). Slow, deliberate shifting prevents it but if I don't pay attention all the time, it happens eventually.

Does anyone know the reason - other than my apparent inexperience with this tranny?

This is no uncommon. There are threads all over here and my350z about tranny's being replaced. I'm on #2. They used cheap synchros and they grind even under normal driving.

Wish me luck...

Well, after reading this post I figured I had to live with the occasional grinding I'd get while shifting from 2nd to 3rd at low RPM's. That was in November of last year.

Over the past month, however, I've noticed that the grinding has been occurring much more regularly. In fact, I've noticed that the grinding is actually happening anytime I shift quickly into 3rd at 5,000+ RPM's. It is so consistent that I can't run the car hard when shifting into 3rd - which is where all the fun's at. I have to slowly and deliberately shift to get into the gear.

On top of all this, my factory warranty expired in late January (just less than two months ago). Still,I've called my local dealership and will begin to plead my case with them. I'm hoping to use the fact that this is a known tranny issue as a means to get the necessary work done free of charge. I'm not sure how the visit will go, but I have my fingers crossed. Let's hope they do the right thing.

The last thing I want to own is a well-taken care of G with a faulty transmission. What fun would that be?

Let's see what happens...

i think he meant not uncommon.. and yes i have had my tranny replaced as well but it was my 5th grinding at speeds UNDER 50 mph... i also noticed 1st to second will not grind if i do not let off the gas one bit when shifting at low speeds and never does when shifting at high speeds

Well, I headed to the dealer this morning and went on a test drive with a service tech. He confirmed that my tranny is screwed. He also added that '03-'04 G's and Z's are notorious for this type of problem, and that they kept a stack of rebuilt trannies in the garage. He also mentioned that shifting into 3rd was the most problematic in his experience, but that 5th and 6th were common too.

When I got back to the dealership after the test drive, I was then informed by my service advisor that only my general factory warrany expired in January, but not the powertrain warranty. Long story short, they've ordered me a newly rebuilt tranny which will be fully covered by Infiniti.

They haven't brought up anything about my mods so I'm hoping they don't turn on me when they open up the hood and see everything I've done to the stock car. Since this is such a "common" problem, I doubt they'll change their minds.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
