Manumatic lazy shifting

I wanted to find out if there has been any discussion on improving the Manumatic shift response time. I did a quick search here and came up empty.

With the number of Nissan/Infiniti vehicles with the VQ35 and manumatic mode, I was hoping to find an aftermarket manumatic ecu, like the one here used by VW/Audi folks (http://www.awe-tuning.com/pages/shar...L=GIACTipChips). Are there any vendors we should ping to see if they are interested in pursuing this? Maybe Technosquare.

PS. I posted this on my350z also to see if there is interest in improving the manumatic mode

Thanks
Joe

Re: Manumatic lazy shifting

i'm very interested to find out also, some kind of electronic shift kit so that it will improve the sloppy, laggy shifting of the automatic or mm.

Re: Manumatic lazy shifting

make that three interested parties. I wish the car would shift everytime I try to. It seems as though the mm cannot keep up with aggressive upshifts although downshifts are more accurate. What makes the 350 shift quicker?

Re: Manumatic lazy shifting

The Z have a different set of ECU parameters. They also don't get in to gear when pulled out of reverse too qucikly. You end up doing a neutral drop. Its bad I have complained and shown the Nissan dealer both cars and they stated the programs for both trannys are different.

Re: Manumatic lazy shifting

Yes the MM in the Z is faster than ours...i was telling a friend of mine who owns a Z about the lazy shifts and ECU reset...etc etc....but when i drove it....that shifts were crazy fast...even faster then when we reset the ECU....he was on 7k miles...i guess the Z AT doesnt even need ECU reset.....i was so jealous... =[

Me too...... I notice you can't just hit the shift, you have to hold it longer. It responds better if you do this. If I just push up or down sometimes it doesn't even respond.

Re: Manumatic lazy shifting

A company called Level 10 might be able to do something for an automatic G to quicken up the shifts. Here's the website.

http://www.levelten.com/

Here's the service they would do to the valve body to quicken the shifts...

http://www.levelten.com/hydrosystem_import.htm

The bad thing about that is it a is pretty expensive service. Also if you are not close to Level Ten then you will have to open up the tranny and get the valve body out, then ship it to Level 10 for service, and then wait to get it back to install it in your car. That means downtime for sure. Not everyone could afford to do that. But from what I've heard from some people who've done it, their manumatic shifts have been lowered down to like .2 seconds or something like that.

But then again I'm not sure how good this would work on auto G's since they don't truly have a manumatic shifter, more like a top gear selector.

Re: Manumatic lazy shifting

You're right RavenR, I had a G35 sedan as a loaner and I did a test drive of that baby and the manual mode only selects the higest gear available and doesn't automatically down shift through the gears as you come to a stop. Not only that but it's more sluggish and slow then the coupe. I wonder why they decided to make different autos for the 3 cars since they are similar.

Re: Manumatic lazy shifting

It doesn't downshift as you slow down to a stop, but it does start off in first and work it's way back up to the number on the dash when you go again.

The 04 was changed, it downshifts to 1 at a stop.

Re: Manumatic lazy shifting

Here's my 10 cents as of this morning.

While the 2003 year 350Z/G35Coupe/G35 Sedan automatic transmissions are the same model, the Transmission Model Code Numbers (TCM programs?) are different. Another difference... the 350Z AT uses ten bolts to mount the AT to the engine. The G35s use eight. A costly difference. Go figure!

Here's a summary of the info I found in the 2003 service manuals:
G35 Sedan - RE5RO5A -- 90/09 or 90/66 -- 8 bolt pattern
G35 Coupe - RE5RO5A -- 90x17 -- 8 bolt pattern
350Z - RE5RO5A -- 90x72 -- 10 bolt pattern

To the best of my knowledge, there's at least eight TCM (Transmission Control Module) programs to date. This helps account for the differences in AT shifting and manual control functions between the various cars.

The way I see it, potential modifications for improved shifting include:
1) Installing a 350Z TCM - I'd do this immediately if I was sure the wiring was the same.
2) Modify the existing TCM program. I'm not aware of anyone working on this.
3) Modify the AT valve body. Level 10. Stillen?
4) Combination of 2) and 3).

Mean Gene has the Level 10 torque converter and valve body modification. He's posted his impressions of these mods in the past. Gene, please provide your latest impressions if you would.

Rumor has it that Stillen R&D is currently working on a valve body modification. One of the challenges seems to be how smart the TCM/ECM (ECU) adaptive control functions are. Sound familiar?
