4.08 gears or ecu upgrade

Well with my tax refund, Im going to spend some on the G.. Really been looking to get new gears(4.08 most likely) for the G as I go to the track alot(n/a though). Also Been thinking its bout time for an ecu upgrade to get the most out of my mods....

Which one would you guys pick?... I have nismo CAI, Greddy evo 2 cat back, 5/8" plenum spacer. its an 03 5at.. I went by the only good shop here in town for building G's or Z's and he told me to go with a unichip b4 i did gears... From what ive heard Unichip is cheap, but he said was perfect for my n/a mods and any more would be a waste of my $$$.. what you guys think

If you plan on going FI get an ECU. Depending on how much power/control you would like to get out of your car if you go FI, that should determain which ECU you should buy. You just do not want to throw money out the window for 2 ECU's in the future. But that's just my thinking.

for 5AT i would just get gears and be done. Going from 3.3x to 4.0x gears will yield much better results than gaining 10-15 whp. I would go for gears if i had 5AT.

thats what i thought too, but the guy at the shop kept saying Id be happier with a power adder rather than the gears...
why would people change the gears if it didnt make a difference though
right now im leaning more toward the gears

ya gears would be a wiser choice right now, besides u never know what kind of mods u might add later on. I would leave the tune at last.

4.083 is too high for the 5AT. 80 mph will be nearly 4k rpms. Don't go any higher than 3.917, 3.692 is ideal. You'll want an ECU reflash to raise your redline a bit too, otherwise you might find yourself bumping off the rev limiter a lot, especially with super aggressive gearing.

I recently installed the 350EVO 3.9FD on my 5AT and I love it. You will notice a bigger improvement with the 3.9FD than with a flash (I have both). Also, if you do the 1/4 a lot it will be worthwhile to have your rev limit increased to 7200 rpm since it will allow you to stay in the gears longer.

Here is the review I posted on my350z

I have 3.7 FD and ECU flashed (technosquare and now Osiris)... considering OP current mod list I would do gears, then reflash later... you may end up adding HFC, possibly headers? and potentially future intake (plenum type) stuff - might as well wait till you know your done with breather mods before bother with any ECU stuff.

I didn’t read if OP is AT or MT?... if AT I suggest 3.693 (3.7)... also, you might want to add differential as long as your there.

+1 and bumping the rev limiter - but generally you need the reflash to do that, so I would wait (if you can't do them both now).

Edit: just re-read OP - it's an AT... I'd advise against 4.08... I suggest 3.7 (possibly 3.9, but IMO 3.7 is the way to go).

ring & pinion gears in the rear end... the 3.692 are OEM for several Nissan trucks and the 07+ sedan (I think the G37 too, I'm not positive though)... Performance Nissan and West Covina Nissan has them... most performance based Nissan dealers should have (or can get) them.

3.9 is aftermarket - 4.0 are OEM... there is a bunch of info in the tech forum here and on my350Z

Hasn't your mpg dropped horribly now? I would do this but the G is going to be my daily driver.

my mpg has always been bad. And the performance mods don’t help (the right foot)...

I have Osiris and one of the maps is econo that can run on lower octane if needed... I don’t drive the car much so mpg isn’t an issue to me at this time.

Buy generally yes, any shorter gears will affect mpg... 3.5 or 3.7 won’t be horribly worse though (it’s only 2-3 hundred rmp more)
