Clutch Trouble?

Hey everyone,
I'm new to the forum; I just picked up my black on black 6MT 05 coupe on Saturday. I'm really stoked to have the car- I absolutely love it.

One thing I've noticed while driving it over the past couple of days is that while I'm in gear at a cruising speed, if I smoothly give it some throttle the tach will shoot up, but the car does not be receive any power. The rpm then drops substantially then goes back up again. It is on this second shoot up that the power kicks in. I first noticed it in sixth gear on the highway, but realized it is occurring in all the other gears as well. I can't imagine this is how the car is supposed to run....

My suspicion is that the previous owner couldn't drive a stick and burned out the clutch (car has 32,000 miles on it), although I bought it used from a dealer in NJ and it passed through all their inspections. Has anybody else experienced these symptoms or can offer me some feedback on the issue?

Thanks a lot!

You definitely need to replace your clutch, the previous owner probably didn't know how to drive MT.

that sounds like slippage, you want to take care of that asap. mine did that for a week then gave out on me. i was on the freeway at the time. not exactly the best time for it to go out but at least it was flat. i dont even want to think what would have happened if i was going uphill in traffic.

Thanks for the help guys - just glad to know its not the tranny or something else seriously wrong. Should the clutch be covered under warranty? How long have you guys been getting out of your clutches before they slip? Any idea how much it'll cost to replace? Thanks.

The clutch is considered a wear and tear item so it will not be covered under warranty. I currently have about 56,XXX miles on my car and my stock clutch is still grabbing strong. But I have my JWT clutch and flywheel at home waiting to be installed once my stock ones go out, I think I paid somewhere around $800 for the combo. Not sure how much the stock ones go for.

Is it worth the extra cost to upgrade the clutch?

might as well upgrade. considering its the stock one that went out so fast, why get another.

Ha, the funny thing is that an aftermarket clutch is the way to go because:
a) CHEAPER, It is infact cheaper
b) Better quality
c) More options
d) Hold more power(depending on what you want to do in the future)

You do need a new clutch by what your explaining about the problem. I would suggest a JWT combo. BUT if you want to go bigger on power I suggest you dop a search and choose which clutch will fit you the best. Hope I helped.

Stock clutches are far from bad....The reason his went out fast is because the previous owner a)did not know how to drive stick or b)went to the track all the time.

either way, i hear way more issues with stock clutches going out faster as opposed to aftermarkets, according to this forum.
