Trouble shifting into 1st from neutral from dead stop

Trouble shifting into 1st from neutral from dead stop

Sorry if this thread is duplicitous or misplaced.

(2004 Sedan 6MT)

But I can be stopped at a light in neutral. I press the clutch pedal and then immediately try to shift to first and it doesn't just go right in there smoothly. I'll have to push the shifter toward first twice, and on the second time, it'll go in. It's akin to the way when you try to downshift and have to increase the revs just a hair to be able to get it into that gear, know what I'm sayin? I was just thinking to myself, is this a problem? I mean many times, I try to do the little rev-match when I'm coming to a stop to get the car back into first and get ready to go, like when coming to a stop sign or something and I know I'm gonna get moving right away. (Those of you who run stop signs might not know what I'm talking about. )

Anyway, I have like 8K left on my powertrain warranty and I'm checking everything.

You shouldn't have to rev at all to get the clutch to go in, but having to step on your clutch twice (once initially, then a second time after realizing the clutch won't go into first smoothly) is pretty normal.

With around 60K or so miles, I'm assuming that's where you're around, that sounds fairly normal, but someone with more experience will hopefully chime in.

i'm pretty sure having to press the clutch in twice for the gear to go is in NOT normal, that would indicate a broken clutch cylinder, my cousin had that in his car where the rubber end of the pushrod in the cylinder had a little notch missing and it wasn't pushing enough fluid on the first push

Pushing the clutch in twice ocassionally into first is something I know is extremely common in a lot of cars, especially on a non-new tranny. What I'm referring to is just a lack of engagement due to either not enough pressure on the shifter initially or more human error than anything.

Im with Idyfohu on the initially human error, but the pushing the clutch in twice umm not so much...im not sure wat he means by "common"

anyway try checking and playing with the clutch, maybe ur not pressing it in enough for it to work properly just my 2 cents

Thanks, guys, and I suppose I should have included it in the first post, but I have a whopping 91K. I drive a lot. That reminds me, I'm due for an oil change.

I had a similar problem with 1st on my car. Definitely not normal. It ended up being due to some sort of alignment pins that position the clutch and pressure plate. Apparently mine had disappeared. I was almost @ 70K miles so the powertrain warranty covered the repair.
