hot spots on flywheel
the guy at infiniti said i have hot spots on my flywheel and they suggest that i replace my clutch and flywheel for $1100. the guy said from the worst he's seen its like a 5 out of a 10 but he can't tell me when it will go bad. maybe 10,000 maybe 30,000 who knows. what do you guys think?
Lara04,
Hot spots are evidence of the frictions associated with a clutches intended function. In fact every used flywheel that I have ever seen had hot spots. This doesn't evidence an issue with the flywheel. However, it is important to remember that because of the clutch and flywheel's dependence on friction, as part of their job, wear also occurs and this is the factor that is more significant. If the flywheel is no longer flat then it should either be resurfaced or disposed of. I do not recommend the use of a non-surfaced used flywheel ever.
Ask your mechanic if they have the ability to resurface the stock flywheel. Resurfacing is best done with a grinder and the surface flatness should be rechecked after machining to insure that the job was done well. There are many machine shops that will not resurface a dual-mass flywheel. This is due to the difficulty in affixing the flywheel in a manner that eliminates its natural tendency to flex. If machined improperly a dual-mass flywheel will have oscillations in the friction surface that would disqualify its re-use. There are a number of aftermarket clutch and flywheel options available for the G. Let me know if you have made any modifications to the car and I will be happy to provide a recommendation.
