Leaving car in gear??
The E-brake should be strong enough to hold the car in place.. unless you are living in areas such as San Fransisco where parking has to be done on slopes, then you would need to put your car in 1st gear w/ E brake. And no putting it in E brake does not damage the car in any way.
Put the car in 1st if pointed DOWN hill(if the car would roll forward), and reverse if you're pointed UP hill(car would roll backwards).
This will make the engine turn the correct way if the ebrake was to fail. The compression/friction force is the same either way.

Its really a personal preference. Never had a issue w just using e-brake. I would use both when on any type of hill as a safety thing.
Its not bad for your car though to do both and its probably something better to get used to.
Just be careful not to let the clutch go as you turn the car on if your still in gear.

Have you ever tried to start your car without pressing on the clutch?
Exactly! Thanks gr8huntr. So leaving the car in gear when you park shouldn't involve worrying about the car lurching if you try to start it in gear, because it won't start that way.
i think they mean like starting up the car then releasing the clutch to do something else before you actually move (ie. like doing the bass fix on the bose systems fml). i have been surprised a few times when i forget i have left it in gear and i clutch in, turn on the car, and release the clutch and lurch forward and stall.
