Well first of all is it an automatic or manual? If you're talking about a manual, you're suppose to leave it in gear. It works as your second brake in case the E-brake fails.

why do you think your e-brake can't hold your car from rolling? It should be fine unless it fails, but those two things aren't the same.

put the car in reverse if pointing downhill, with the front tires turned towards the curb.

put the car in 1st gear if pointed uphill with the front tires pointing away from the curb.

of course using the e-brake...

I have a 6MT. If I'm parked level, I always leave my car in neutral emerg on and I always start the car in neutral.

without having the car in gear you will not be able to accelerate. If your talking about when coming to a stop keep it in gear until the rpm's drop to around 2000 then clutch in and brake. If your talking about when parked, always keep it in gear. I have a friend who says he never puts it in gear when parked and has rolled into parked cars several times....

I always leave my car in neutral with the e-brake on, my thinking being if something hits the car it will mess up the transmission, along with not being used to leaving it in gear and having it jump forward everytime someone parks it in gear and I start it up.

My Dad always left his 4-speed Olds F85 in second gear. Why? The boot was stiff and if you always left it in first (forward position) when you were driving down the road in fourth, it would tend to jump out.

If I had one, I would leave my 6MT in second gear.

Just one of life's lessons....:)

Leaving you car in gear is just part of learning how to drive. In almost every
city in this country there are steep streets or driveways where it's smart to
point your tires into the curb, put the brake on and leave it in gear. If for
no other reason but safety it should be required.... Ya ever driven
around San Francisco, that's a lesson all by itself....scary!
