Changing Manual Tranny Fluid

for those of you have done this, is it difficult? I'm planning on getting the service manual, but i'm not sure how much work this entails. Is checking the fluid level difficult also?

It's very simple. I'd say it's about on par with an oil change. You will need a fluid pump ($10-15) to transfer the fluid up stream into the fill hole and a good oil pan to catch the fluid.

What I use for my manual trany/rear end diff oil changes are the small portable oil pumps available at your local marine shop for filling the lower gear case of a outboard motor. The pump screws on to the top of the oil bottle and the suction tube gets most of the oil out. It's quick, easy and no mess.

Re: Changing Manual Tranny Fluid

Agreed. Very easy. These are the basic steps.

1. Get the car up on jackstands on all 4 corners to give yourself ample room.
2. Locate the filler plug on the side of the tranny case and open with 3/8" Hex Drive Bit.
3. Locate the drain plug on the end of the tranny case with a 3/8" Hex Drive Bit to undo the drain plug.
4. Drain oil into pan.
5. Replace drain plug.
6. Replace tranny fluid with 3.25 qts of fluid. The service manual recommends using the following viscocity. You will need a gear oil pump to send the new fluid up stream into the tranny case.

Genuine NISSAN Manual Transmission Fluid
(MTF) HQ Multi 75W-85 or API GL-4, Viscosity
SAE 75W-85 or 75W-90

7. Replace filler plug.

Since this is such an easy procedure I will change my tranny fluid every 15K instead of the recommended 30K on the manual. Doesn't hurt.

Re: Changing Manual Tranny Fluid

I changed my manual tranny fluid on my old car and I don't think its worth it.....I mean all the work (4 jack stands)

I think I would take it to a dealer...or somewhere with a lift...they could do it quick..its not even that costly.....

Getting the car on all 4 jack stands is kinda scary to me......
