Changed some fluids today, thought I'd share.

Vehicle has 39.5k miles.

Changed the oil w/ Valvoline 5w-30 full synthetic

Used an M35 Purolator filter

Flushed/changed the transmission fluid with Pennzoil syncromesh

Flushed/changed the differential fluid with Valvoline 80w-90 GL-5 synthetic gear fluid


I've read that Valvoline prevents wear better than Mobil1, I've used mobile1 in the past but found this to be enough information to change. I know there are better oils out there but these are readily available at local stores, and cheap ($20 for 5qts).

The purolator filter is an inch longer than stock giving me more peace-of-mind during the 5k mile oil change intervals.

The transmission was fairly notch-y before the fluid change and is notably better now, enough for me to find satisfaction in the change. To note, I prefer to change syncromesh fluids as often as 10k miles to eliminate the chance of additives breaking down before the next change.

The diff fluid was disgusting, looked dark gray and the magnet had a decent amount of build-up on it. I have not experienced any noise/vibration from the differential to date. The new fluid should keep it running longer and being synthetic it should take longer to break down.

Any comments are welcome, obviously if someone has had a negative experience with one of the mentioned fluids I'd gladly like to hear about it.

 

How did you find unscrewing the differential drain plug? I went to try mine and the 10mm hex socket wouldn't fit (it was too big), it's almost like the bolt has rust built-up on it. Did you experience anything like that?

I had no issues removing mine.
Also, once I cleaned off the magnet I screwed it back in numerous times to pick up any remaining shavings.
