Question 5th gear hesitation/vibration - problem or characteristic?

I bought a 2006 G35x (automatic, sedan) a month ago. Is it "normal" for the car to upshift to 5th at as little as 30mph (when gently accelerating)? And my real question is... is it "normal" for it to hesitate/vibrate a little bit while in 5th on gentle upgrades and downgrades or when gently accelerating on a level road? If I slap the shifter over into manual mode it goes into 4th and the hesitation/vibration stops.

I do not have an "X", but from my experience:

1. Yes it will shift into 5th really early to maximize MPG
2. My car does hesitate into 5th gear (does it going into 2nd gear as well) in both auto and manu-matic mode. (I've got the transgo kit and a high stall TC...so it may be different.)

Sorry my answers are not more direct. Best of luck.

Allow me to clarify...
The hesitation/vibration I feel is not while shifting INTO 5th gear.
It is while already in 5th gear.

The sensation is one of being in too high a gear, as if the car is struggling and "should" be in a lower gear for proper performance.

I know exactly what you mean about your vibration. I have an 06 g35x with the same issue its just slight as of now. I work at a Nissan so I looked into it and there happens to be a tsb on it. (Technical Service Bulletin for noobs) Sucks because the bulletin concludes that a valve body remove & replacement is the permanent fix to the problem, though not mandated under warranty another thing i tried was a Nissan Matic-S transmission flush at 60K, no change.

Hi everyone,

Sorry about reviving this thread but it's exactly what I'm looking for.

I have a G35 RWD sedan, 2007 V36, with the exact same issue. It started about a year ago. On slight inclines, while already cruising at highway speed in fifth gear, under light acceleration, the engine hesitates in a way you would recognize if you were driving stick and were in too high a gear. It's very noticeable while on cruise control as minor throttle adjustments are made. It does not happen on flat surfaces.

@ joe, what was the TSB you tracked down? I was not able to find anything talking about the issue.

Regards,
J
