Anyone switch the shift direction for manual mode (auto tranny)

I did a search and came up with nada.

It pains me that moving the shifter forward upshifts. It feels like it should be a downshift?

Has anyone attempted to switch dirction of up and down.

I'd rather have manual but it is the wife's car.

Thanks.

It bothered me at first as it seemed un-natural to push forward to shift up. I think BMW is one of the only ones that you pull back to up-shift?

I decided to just get used to it rather than try to convert it. I don't think I ever read any posts about someone actually doing it.

It kills me...so goes against my inner being.

Seems like a possible easy mod but then again...

Personally, i hate the fact that BMW's manual mode has you pull the shifter back to go up in gear. I drove an 02 SMG M3 and redlined it cuz i'm so used to pushing up to shift in my car. I pushed up on the M3 and it did nothing, i was like... wtf??

I love pushing forward to upshift. Once you get used to it, it's perfect, could be a little faster shifts tho.

When you shift and accelerate, you get thrown back in your seat. It seems un-natural to have to reach and push forward while your body is moving back, in order to shift up! Again, I'm used to it now, but I think BMW has it right.

It does feel unnatural at first, but I got use to it after a while. Its kinda like when you play a flight simulation games and the control aren't inverted.

I won't say all but most racecar use pull-back as an upshift. XTRAC use the same motion on their sequential gearbox. Rally & open wheel guys use the same method.

Mazda also is a pull back to up-shift. I personally like the forward-up/backward-down shifting approach for manumatics. But I wish I had a manual.

YES, fast, easy. awsome mod

So I read this post @ work about “pull back, shift up”. Driving home my brain wants to pull back, only to hit redline. This is fupup, this needs to be fixed. So here it is. Took me less than a hour and that’s only cause I triple check along the way. First I accept NO responsibility. Everything here is for 04 coupe. Quick check of 03 sedan and 06 coupe shows all the same. Have fun.

With engine off, put gear selector in drive.
Remove shift ****. Remove consol trim.
DISCONECT negative battery cable.
At front of shift selector you’ll find connector “M47”
With small flat blade pop “M47” out of hold clip.
Separate connector. On the male pin side, remove both the pin retainer clips.
With needle nose pliers gently pull on wire to release pin.
Swap 7 and 8. Re-assemble.

edit
After a spirited test drive, I can’t call this a mod, it’s a fix. I have a more positive up-shift and less chance of premature downshift. It took virtually no getting use to, it cost NOTHING and if you don’t like it you can return to stock and no one will know.
