G35 Differential Type: Open or Posi?

I'm glad I found a good, technical, G35 forum. If you can tell by my sig, I'm a drag racer and a Ford guy. I'm interested in purchasing a G35 coupe for my wife. We test drove one tonight and I was impressed. It wasn't a gut wrenching muscle car, but I was surprised at the torque of the V6.

Now on to my question. The dealer told me that the base model G35 had an open differential. He also told me that the only way to get the viscous limited slip was to purchase the premium package. This sounds like a bunch of BS to me. Why would they put an open differential in anything performance oriented?

Is the differential in the base G35 coupe a posi-traction, but not a viscous limited slip? Help me out here. My wife likes the car. I'm interested in buying the base model for less than $30K, but I'm not buying a car with an open diff.

On another topic I drove the G35, 2005 Mustang GT (auto), and Pontaic GTO (auto) all in the same night.

Re: G35 Differential Type: Open or Posi?

The G35 has what Infiniti refers to as an Electronic LSD, ie. the computer applies brake to the spinning wheel to transfer torque to the other- basically an open diff with modern electronic controls. Of course this sucks, especially starting out in really slippery conditions.

They came out with a viscous LSD (I believe), but only on the 6MT equipped cars. I could be wrong on some of the details though.

Re: G35 Differential Type: Open or Posi?

The electronic traction or stability control wouldn't work with an open differential. With power going to one wheel only, braking the non-driven wheel would have little effect.

In that case, I have some of the details wrong. Could someone else help with 'stang's question?

not sure what the base model comes with but the VLSD is only available with the Perf. Tire and Wheel package or the Sport Suspension Package... the premium package does not come with it

Re: G35 Differential Type: Open or Posi?

tsolin01 is correct. The 5ATs without the Tire and Wheel Package come with an open diff. All 6MTs and 5ATs with the tire and wheel package come with the VLSD. In 05, both the Tire & Wheel Package and the Performance Package will have the posi rear diff.

The 6MT sedans models include the sport tuned suspension pkg which includes the VLSD

Re: G35 Differential Type: Open or Posi?

I have a G35 5AT (premium package only), car came with standard 17" wheels. I had the torque converter mod done. The dealer told me I have an open diff, but when I do a burn out, I leave two equal length strips of rubber. Can someone explain that???

Only the 2004 and 2005 6MT Sedans come with a Viscous Limited Slip Diff. As for the auto sedans only the 2005 (except for the X) year model will have an option for an VLSD with the perf wheel and tire package.

As for the coupes I know all 6MT coupes of all years come with the VLSD. I believe auto coupes of all years had the option of the VLSD if it had the perf wheel and tire package.

Re: G35 Differential Type: Open or Posi?

I talked to the service department. The car comes with a posi-traction rear end standard. The viscous limited slip is an upgrade. I didn't think that any car would come with an open rear-end these days, especially a performance car.

Re: G35 Differential Type: Open or Posi?

I was at the dealer and did an experiment. Two coupes in the air on lifts. One auto and one manual. When you turned one wheel on the auto, the other wheel would turn the opposite direction. When doing the same with the manual car the wheels turned the same direction. Also that with the auto car which was a base model auto, you could turn one wheel and have someone hold the other wheel and it would not move, just like if you had an open diff, but it would still lay two strips of rubber, just like the manual..................Strange.

Re: G35 Differential Type: Open or Posi?

351Stang,
The LSD the service department is talking about is Brake LSD. This is the electronic version Gordgee was talking about. It brakes the spinning wheel enough to transfer power to the wheel with traction.

I have a 2003 6MT and it didn't come with an LSD. I like it though. Because that way you are forced to upgrade to a better lsd, like the kaaz (sp?).

On the 2005 mustang, beautiful car, unfortunately solid rear axle. just liek the g35, you cant have everything for 30k these days. Looks like it would take about 50k to get everything I want.

Haha.

But can anybody explain why these open diff cars can leave two black marks a mile long. I have had a ton of other cars that never had LSD or POSI and we called them one wheeled wonders because they could only leave one black mark.

Re: G35 Differential Type: Open or Posi?

if you look closely, the tracks are not the same length due to the open diff. they are close which tells you nissan did a great job designing the drivetrain, but not exactly. My right rear wheel always breaks loose before the left rear. With new or near new tires, you get same length marks. with older tires, the difference is more pronounced. Also remember with the VDC off there is still some VDC and Brake LSD active, unless you pull the fuse in the engine compartment.
