Question Drop from 4.08 to 3.3 possible?

Will the 3.3 (open) Ring and Pinion gears would work in a 3.5 (VLSD) diff. with a Quaife diff. installed? I am currently running 4.08 gears, and the gas is killing me. I was going to swap back to the 3.5's, but if I could go 3.3, that'd be great.

Basically, is the ring gears bolt pattern the same on all the diffs? Are the pinions the same length?

Thanks,

Ian

If they are a direct swap, I might be interested. I currently have the diff. out of the car at this time too.

It's a 1st gen. Sedan and I currently have the 4.08's in with a Quaife diff., and Diff cooler, etc. I don't want to swap pumpkins, just ring and pinion gears. I might just go back to the 3.5's, and sell the 4.08's. I need the $$$. LOL

Ok, after talking with OCG35, the 3.3's will not fit the Quaife diff. I have. I have the Quaife for the 3.5 VLSD cars, and the 3.3 open diff's have a thicker ring gear, and ARE NOT and direct swap. (not sure about the 3.3 VLSD diffs)

Thanks for the help everyone.

I went from about 16 MPG (3.5 FD) to around 12MPG (4.08 FD). With my current commute being about 50 miles in each direction, I was having to fill up about every 2-2.5 days. I was getting about 220-250 miles out of a tank, and that was all freeway driving. With the 3.5 FD, I am getting over 320 miles out of a tank (freeway).

The car was incredibly quick around town, from stoplight to stoplight, but there was no "top end" on the freeway. I could surge forward to pass with no problems, but "ran out of steam" anything beyond that.

Basically, the 4.08 FD is great for around town, but if you have a long commute, they are not the right choice for you.

Hope this helps,

Ian

The whole job could be done in a single day if you have all the tools needed, and parts needed. (but most people don't have a hydrolic press in their garage) I have a friend that works at a dealership, and has access to the shop/tools.

As for parts, I would recommend getting new bolts to attach the ring gear to the VLSD. They run about $3.00 each, and you need 10 of them. You also NEED a new Crush Sleeve, and oil seal for about another $30. These are what I would say are the "need to get" parts. If you have a good amount of miles on your car, you may want to look into getting new bearings, but they are a little pricey. You may also need to get some shims to properly "center" the VLSD in the housing to line up with the new pinion gear.

I don't want to turn this into a "For Sale" thread, so PM me if you are interested. Z1 Performance has the 4.08 gears listed at $565 + $25 shipping. They also have the "Install Kit 1" that has all the "needed" parts for $32.50, and "Install Kit 2" for $299. (new bearings, etc.)

Let me know if you are interested, and I will PM you the price I am asking.
